Dear All,

I have found that regular pranayam (in my case during chanting) has

helped lower my need for sleep.

If I chant before going to sleep at night, I wake up very refreshed

after only a few hours of sleep.

I wonder if others have had a similar experience. I would love to

know.

Hi Latha,

My own experience is that my need for a certain amount of sleep waxes

and wanes, dependent on what, I don't know.

Dependent on the energy level at that point in time.

Pranayam is known to boost energy levels (has something to do with

increased oxygen levels inside the body), and this is most keenly

observed by people who do it ocassionally.

For people who do it regularly, they will not notice it so obviously

because they always have a high energy level, and so increments are

not so obviously seen.

Jai Ma!

(P.S.: for all this talk, let me just confide that I don't do any

pranayam, and that I need more than my 8 hours of sleep! so much for

bookish knowledge then!)

A story is told of Tulsidas when he went to visit one Saint. The

Saint was not at home, so he lay his head down on the ground to be

blessed by the dust from the saint's feet. He repeated the name of

Ram. When the saint arrived and found Tulsidas sleeping. He said to

him: Isn't it the jobe of spiritual aspirants to try to stay awake as

much as possible for their benefit and that of the world? So why are

you sleeping? Tulsidas replied: That is true for yogis, ascetics

and jnanis, but for a devotee, the Lord does the work. So I remember

his name and sleep quite soundly knowing that he is doing the work all

the 24 hours.

Namaste Latha,

Silent repetition of the mantra given by my Guru before sleep works,

and the extra blessing is waking up and it is still going on.
