A true guru knows past life of his disciple & his spiritual identity, position???

I have heard the following statement:

 

"A true guru knows the past life of his true disciple and his spiritual identity, position and service in the spiritual world."

 

Is it true?

anyway if that were the case would Srila Prabhupada have initiated such a bunch as us ...or is this simply the demonstration of the undeserved mercy of the Vaisnava saint Acharyas
