yes, you can eat vanilla on Ekadasi as this plant is an orchid - not a grain (grassy plant seeds) or a legume (bean). they say "vanilla bean" but it is a misnomer (it kinda looks like a black string bean /images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Primarily Ekadasi vritham is observed for self control on all aspects to show Lord that we are willing to sacrifice our likes to reach Him. SOme people eat lots other than grains and pulses and cereals since technically they are prohibited without realising the fact of self sacrifice with Love towards God. Vannila comes under the category depending on whether you like it or not. Technically Ice cream is just frozen milk and water with cream. So it may not have anything mentioned as prohibited for ekadasi. So can one eat ice creams on ekadasi? what is the point in observing Ekadasi vritham if one does not have a self imposed control to sacrifice the likes atleast for one day for the sake of God. Not necessarily something needs to be mentioned to be prohibited, for that matter many food items are not mentioned, but we have to use our common sense as what is the basic idea of Ekadasi vritham and it is nothing but self control with total devotion and not looking into a book with list of avoidable food stuffs.
