Scientists in South Korea and the U.S. both claimed creation of the first human clones for the extraction of embryonic stem cells in February. A Vatican archbishop, in a 2002 address to the United Nations, while also condemning reproductive cloning, noted that so-called therapeutic cloning is "an even more serious offence against human dignity and the right to life, since it involves human beings (embryos) who are created in order to be destroyed." Embryonic stem cells have so far never been proven efficacious in the treatment of any disease. Treatments derived from adult stem cells have, however, shown great potential for the treatment of a wide array of degenerative conditions.
