Are Puranas part of Vedas?

If so, why do many great Hindu saints condemn them as false? Starting from Dayanand Saraswati to Vivekananda to Raman Maharishi to the present gurus, most of them have contempt for puranas and place value only on the four vedas. So what am i to make of this?
