Samrat Asoka went away from the sanathana dharma and fell into the clutches of Buddhism. As a result he converted Hindus in Indonesia, vietnam,Sri Lanka,Thailand,Burma,Japan and china to buddhism.Bhramins had a very clever revenge on him for this atrocious act. How?

The Bhramin sang songs glorifying Asoka as "devanampriya"(meaning one who is loved by devas).Asoka fell for the trap and inscribed himself as "devanampriya" in many scriptures.

What is the meaning of "devanampriya?"

Devas will never like one who wants to become a saint.Becasue then he will stop the yagnas which are so essential for their survival. So when rishis like viswamithra did thapas, they tried to destroy that thapas by sending oorvasi.Devas actually want humnas to lead grahastha life doing yagnas. So such ignorant people were loved ones of devas. So those were called as devanampriyas.

So these bhramins called Asoka a fool and he inscribed it thinking that it is an achievement.

Isnt that revenge sweet?
