verses on animal rights needed

I am looking for direct quotes from Indian scriptures that talk to us about how we should relate to those in animal form, what the karma is for mistreating them etc.

 

I am very weak on scripture so all help would be appreciated

I quoted three verses from Manu Dharma Shaastra that should be useful. They are in the nirvisesha/shunyavadi thread, in my post dated 7/16/02. Though they simply discuss the consequences of killing animals rather than approaching it from an "animal rights" viewpoint. Frankly, I don't think you will find anything from the latter point of view.

Thanks, I'll look them up. What is an "animal rights viewpoint?" I want to interject the "sees with equal vision" understanding into that discussion. I want people to understand there is a conscious living being hooked up to that body and contrary to Descarte there is more there than a machine
