My role model is krishna, whenever i do something i would first ask "what would krishna do?" and do it that way.

This time I am having a problem, that is I am an Indian kid who came to America about 5 years ago. Still, I am not "Americanized", I don't think like my American friends, I don't act like them but I try to be like them and it seems hard. Also, because I am an ''Indian'', some of my mom's friends try to make me mingle with other 'Indian American' kids (one in particular) to make them 'Indianized'- the kids don't want to hang out with me and the parents force me, what would krishna do in this situation. Kuch to karega... Please help me.

When ever I try to please the parents, the kids get mad, when I try to please the kids the parents do! The rule of 'self less action + humility' said in Karma Yoga is not working! HELP!. I am asking you people because you are very deeply devoted to krishna, may be you think like him too.

Be neutral , dont over react to anything , be calm and humble to everyone around you. You dont have to change anyone , neither you need to change yourself.

Again you may ask question - if you are in rome be rome , yet that is true, but the ajustment you do should be to an extend that does not ruin your own nature.

Jus pray and chant his name , he will coem to you for the rest !

cuz, krishna is "The GOD". He is completely free from all the finite aspects of human nature. So, trying to be like him would be kind of hard in my perspective though. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

However, you can ask him for help and he will surely help you. lol, Us being like Sri Krishna would be like Cinderella trying to be He-man or Superman.

Krsna's great devotee, Prahlada Maharaja too was surrounded by kids at school who not understanding the purpose of life were fond of all manner of nonsense and mischief. Prahlada was very skilled at always remembering Krsna. In this way Krsna was always pleased with him. Prahlada is famous as the devotee who achieved perfection through smaranam (remembering Krsna).

When Krsna is pleased, everyone is pleased. An analogy often given relates to the care of a plant. By watering the root of the plant, the leaves, flowers and stem will benefit and be nourished. Krsna is the root of everything and everyone, present in every atom and factually dwelling in everyone's heart as their constant companion, the Supersoul.

However, if we would try to water the leaves or the flower of that plant directly, not even those leaves or the flower would benefit; what to speak of the entire plant and root. It is the same in life. Krsna can be the only center of our watering, our love, our attention. Indeed, the Christian Bible says that wherever is a man's mind, there also will be his heart.

Like Prahlada Maharaja, let your mind always be on that beautiful form of Sri Krsna. There will be your heart. And your life will be completely successful, without doubt.

In the Nectar of Devotion, presented by the Indian guru A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, he writes this about remembering Krsna:<TABLE border=0 cellpadding=5 cellspacing=5 width="100%"><TD width=30%" VALIGN=middle><center><img src=http://home.primus.ca/~caitanya/syama.jpg width=145 height=236 border=0></center> </td>

<TD width=70%" VALIGN=middle><font color=blue><center>Remembrance</center>

Some way or other, if someone establishes in his mind his continuous relationship with KRSNa, this relationship is called remembrance. About this remembrance there is a nice statement in the ViSNu PurANa, where it is said, "Simply by remembering the Supreme Personality of Godhead all living entities become eligible for all kinds of auspiciousness. Therefore let me always remember the Lord, who is unborn and eternal."

In the Padma PurANa the same remembrance is explained as follows: "Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord KRSNa, because if someone remembers Him, either at the time of death or during his span of life, he becomes freed from all sinful reactions."</font></td></table>

Prahlada's fame and glory are well-documented in the Vedic scriptures. I would be happy to post some of those stories here if you would enjoy that. I had to be around people all day in my job, so I just tried as best as possible to remember Krsna as much as I could. I especially found His form of Caitanya easy to remember, for He is very very compassionate to fallen souls. My life became successful despite being constantly surrounded by all manner of nonsense and mischief, every manner of nonsense and mischief.

I'd like to wish you all success with Sri Krsna. That is all that really matters. Everything else is inconsequential; mere teardrops in the ocean of eternity.

Hi..I can very well understand your situation since I too face a similar situation being in US but brought up in India. I can tell you what I do as a person who is trying to understand the essence of Gita without getting influenced by other's thoughts, mainly to live as what GITA says. From whatever I have understood and experienced, I will share with you. Dont try to change anyone just to please anyone. Parents belong to different generations, we belong to different generation. If you try to take the role of parents and try to move with kids of y(our) age, its natural that you get discarded by them. Change cannot be expected overnight. I would rather suggest you to become role model for those kids by mingling with them, yet have your own distinguished identity in not aquiring the health and mind spoiling habits from those kids who are americanized. You can get Americanized on all the positive sides which would make people to realise you as a role model, rather than do all sorts of nonsense what they do thinking that its the way to enjoy life. This will take time for them to accept you and just because you want them to accept you in a short span of time dont indulge in activities to please them. Ultimately this will take you nowhere. Stop trying to give advice to those kids by telling them not to do this and that, but make them realise that Indian values and cultural heritage is something great to follow which you can do only in course of time by actually living through the Indian values by yourself and not overnight. I have personally been illtreated by Indian fellow students brought up in US, for nothing. Later when they realise they come to you by themselves. Its not honestly possible to bring everyone into spiritual development suddenly irrespective of which country they are brought up. If you try this within India also you will fail. Spiritual development comes only in course of time as the individual mature and experience several things in their lives and cannot be forced to please the elders or the youngsters. By doing so, ultimately you are not actually following anything. The only practical way is by being humble and egoless and without any snobishness which most of the american brought up Indian kids lack. This will certainly bring people towards you at one time.

Regards

Shyam
