The Rajya Sabha MP, Karan Singh, has written to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, suggesting that the Government organise a Bhagvad Gita festival at Kurukshetra instead of the Mahabharata festival that is being planned at the historic place annually.

Mr. Singh wrote the letter earlier this week in reference to the President's address to the joint session of Parliament last month wherein Abdul Kalam announced the Government's decision to organise a `Mahabharata utsav' in Kurukshetra annually.

According to Mr. Singh, the battle of Mahabharata was a "very unfortunate and dreadful event" which resulted in large-scale suffering and destitution. "Because of it, the entire Kuru dynasty was decimated and Lord Krishna's Yaduvansh was also destroyed. Thereafter, the Dwapar epoch came to an end and the terrible Kaliyuga enveloped the earth with its darkness."

This being the case, the MP said, it would not be appropriate to celebrate the battle of Mahabharat. Instead, he has suggested an annual "Bhagvad Gita" festival. "That would add to the lustre of the place and also attract intellectuals and devotees from all over the world."
