Jahnava Nitai Das
ei mata capalya karena saba sane sabe strimatra na dekhena drstikane stri 'hena na prabhu ei avatare sravane o na karila-vidita samsare ataeva sata yata maha mahima sakale 'gauranga-nagara' hena stava nahi bale "The Lord was apt to indulge in indiscriminate, merciful behavior towards all, except that he never looked at a woman, even by a sidelong glance. It is known to all the world that He did not even allow the name of a woman to enter His ear. Those who are His real devotees, therefore, never address Sri Gauranga as 'Gauranga-nagari' or the enjoyer of women. Although all forms of praise are applicable to the Lord, the wise only sing that which is in accordance with His nature." Guest guest
It should be 'Gauranga-nagara' instead of 'Gauranga-nagari' as 'nagara' is the masculine gender, enjoyer of the 'women' while 'nagari' is feminine.
raga
Gauranga-nagari refers to the ladies of Nadiya who are in love with Gaura. Hence "Gauranga-nagari bhava". To look at it from the mainstream Gaudiya point of view, though, it would be theologically permissable to address Him as Gauranga Nagari while considering His inner bhAvAveza, as He is Sri Krishna Himself who has accepted the lustre of the golden limbs (gaura anga) and the bhava of the crest-jewel of all nagaris, Sri Radha. But this is not a correct reading of the verse in question.
muralidhar
I was just thinking about this verse today, when reading Gaudiya Kanthahara, 4.36 Is there some contention over this verse? Am I right in thinking that the verse is saying it is wrong to think of Sri Gauranga as an enjoyer of ladies, in the way that Rasaraj Sri Krishna is the enjoyer of lady-love? Exactly so. Vrindavan Das did not agree with Gaura Nagari upasana. You may refer to http://www.raganuga.com/cgi-bin/raga/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=15 for more considerations on the Gaura Nagari tradition.
