REUTERS/Handout
Indian police say "monkey man" attacker is not an animal
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Injuries reported by dozens of people in the Indian capital as having been caused by a mysterious ape-like creature were not caused by an animal, police said on Sunday. But they were still to solve the case of the mysterious "monkey man" attacks despite narrowing down suspects in the week-long saga that has created hysteria in the city. Police have received 324 complaints of people sighting or being bitten and clawed by the ape-like creature, 260 of which were found to be hoaxes, Manoj Lall, Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), told Reuters. "Medical reports are categorical that none of the injuries of the 64 people hurt in the incidents were caused by nail or tooth marks," Lall said. Delhi Police have offered a reward of 50,000 rupees ($1,063) for information leading to the capture of the "monkey man" which they now believe is not an animal but human. Lall said police received 22 calls from panic-stricken residents on Saturday night of which 18 were found to be hoaxes. Three frantic people have fallen to their deaths from buildings so far because they thought the mysterious creature was chasing them. Descriptions of the attacker have varied wildly. Some people have said it had a metallic claw, others that it was like a cat with glowing eyes and one said it had flaming red eyes and green lights glowing on its chest. Monkeys run wild in some parts of New Delhi, sometimes pouncing on pedestrians and entering houses.

Jahnava Nitai Das 2 Report post Posted May 20, 2001 Three frantic people have fallen to their deaths from buildings so far because they thought the mysterious creature was chasing them. Its odd that you don't hear of any serious injuries caused by this "monkey man", but people are willing to jump off of buildings to escape it - risking death. It appears from what is written, that these people who jumped off of buildings did it based on rumors - they never even saw the creature. Of course I am just judging from what I read here.
