3000 men are in one Akshauhini

what is an akshauhini,

and was it true that in each army only warriors of equal calibre would battle each other, e.g: guy on horse can only fight others on horses.etc???

No it is not true, all is fair in War,especially in Mahabaratha war there were pretty much no rules,Akshauhini means the Vyuha where in the better one prevails but the battle is still not won as its like a step to towards meeting better warriors, its like you encounter the Soldiers first and then the maharathi, but War is not always faught between equals, sometimes the better warrior ends up losing even to someone who wasnt as good as him.

This seems totally wrong (very small). Can you give a reference or can someone with a clear reference give information? Thanks.\
