today a cristian friend of mine from work approached me with some problems and she was quite upset. when i gave her some quotes from the gita, i told her that they've helped me when i feel low, and that maybe it would help her also. i mentioned it helps to detatch oneself from the material world. her reply was that she didnt want the quotes, she didnt want to feel detatched, she wanted to do it the christian way. her example was this:

if a hindu man was standing on railway tracks with a train coming towards him, he would be saying "the train is not real" - her example of detachment. whereas if a christian man was standing on railway tracks with a train coming towards him, with faith he would question if what he is doing is right, and ask god to stop the train.

my question is this, though the paths of both religions are set out in different ways, dont they lead to the same place? ie. God? why are so many christians unaccepting of our path, as we would accept theirs? finally, how do you view this argument? detachment vs faith? sorry if this is a stupid of vague question, but i dont know what to make of what she said to me, besides that it made me a bit angry.

<< if a hindu man was standing on railway tracks with a train coming towards him, he would be saying "the train is not real" - her example of detachment. >>

no sane hindu would think so.

any unsane of any faith could think so.

<< whereas if a christian man was standing on railway tracks with a train coming towards him, with faith he would question if what he is doing is right, and ask god to stop the train. >>

no. no xian has caused stoppage of a train by the strength of faith. besides, xians thin they are sinners. so, why worry if a sinner dies by train? he woudl run out of the track, but it has nothing to do with xianity.

<<my question is this, though the paths of both religions are set out in different ways, dont they lead to the same place? ie. God? >>

the aim is god, and god is same, but the xian do not know it. that is why they talk of "my god and your god."

the concept of god in both are different.

<< why are so many christians unaccepting of our path, >>

some who have open minds, do.

<< as we would accept theirs? >>

we do not acept xianity. we stick with hinduism,

and have no heartburn if some one else is a xian.

they do. it is pain for them to see a non xian around.

In addition, they doesn't stand good people around them, just like this - "Rotten elements injures whole society"

This is a missionery and their mission is this to Rotten the society.

{if a hindu man was standing on railway tracks with a train coming towards him, he would be saying "the train is not real" - her example of detachment.}

Well you can say it is the fault of some Hindu for explaining things like that. When they sat 'real' they mean permanent and never-changing of which God and the Atman is the only thing. The train is made up of matter which is always changing form, but has also always been there in another form. Of what materials were used to make the train now, was something else before and will be something else after.

The train is really there and standing on the tracks will result in the death of the Hindu, if he can't see he's in danger, maybe he deserves to die. But it sounds like the girl just rediculed Hinduism, you shouldn't put up with that.

{why are so many christians unaccepting of our path, as we would accept theirs?}

Because their religion teaches them that you can only get to God through Christ, all other religions are false and the people of other religions need to be converted. Don't expect Christians to accept Hindus, this will never happen as it is against their religion to do so.

"as we would accept theirs?" What do you mean? I don't think all Hindus accept theirs? With teaching like that it would be contradictory to accet theirs. You can't accept 2 opposite religions as the truth when one is clearly against the other.
