Thank you maadhav for your response.

You write:

"it is not prohibited. it is discouraged.

rama is an ideal for grhasthaasrama."

Can you please give me a reference from Hindu scriptures from whcih it may be derived that polygamy is discouraged?

You write:

"however, khstriyas can have more wives."

Can you please inform me what is a "khstriyas"?

Thank you.

ramayana is an epic that sescribes the pastimes of rama.

rama chose to have only one wife, even when his father (king) had four (and as a kshatriya king it was okay.)

that has set the example to follow for the hindus.

kshatriya is any one who fights to maintain law and order and freedom to practice sanatana dhamra in Vedic society.

no society can mainain law and order without kshatriyas.

no progress in amy field, incuding spiritual field, could be made without law and order.

1. The one eternal dharma shastra describing how god descended as an ideal son, husband, father, friend, king, divine person.... to show mankind what dharma is, and how an individual can live as per the dharma under all circumstances.

2. As a dharma shastra, what an ideal wife is (Sita ji).

Perhaps we can add more here about Hanumanji, and other characters.

3. It also describes, how a person with all good qualities, can become adharmic, and ultimately lead to his own destruction, because of he slips into adharma because he lust another person's wife.

Pranaams.

Jai Shri Ram.

"however, khstriyas can have more wives."

is this explicitly stated in the scriptures that kshatriyas can be polygamous? And why is this partial treatment given to kshatriyas?

<font color="blue">Hi you all !

Polygamy or Monogamy is not the matter, these are the matter of time. Who is happy and who is more puzzled ? Monogamy is only one headache but polygamy ? Multiple ! The human mind's desires inspire people here and there, but if the person enhances his spirituality, he will be only heaven-gamy / liberation-gamy. So I think we should stop here about this topic. Thanks You All. If I am saying wrong, kindly pardon me. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

gamy (gami) mean on the way / to the way.

also, gita/krishna encourges control of sex

for one who want to advance faster spiritually.

that implies one or zero wife.

brahma has created sex pleasure with the help of kamadev and rati in order to propgage this world lives.

brahma's youngest son, narad refused to marry.

he totally has controlled sex impulse.

krishna bhaktas try to follow him.

Narad chose to glorify narayan and took up a mission to liberate lives - jivas from the brith-death cycle.

kshatriya dharma is to fight adharma without fear of death.

so a khatriya may not live long. generally, the sons of kshatriya become kshatriyas, and the vedic society needs kshatriyas. therefore they are allowed to have more than one wife to produce kshtriyas. they however, need to be capable to keep their wives and children happy.

in bharat were many muslim families produce many asuras,

we need many kshatriyas. in current time however, even kshatriyas keep one wife.
