Early Aryans needed cows for agriculture and depended on them. Then invented stories to make them holy? Makes sense.

.. many economies (like in some african huge tribes and peoples) are heavily based on cows and they have no problem in using them for milk and work then killing when they need to do it

 

under a materialistic mentality, there's a huge number of cows that can be killed without stopping the development and success of a cow based economy

And FYI cow is not strong enough for agriculture. And cow is not the only animal that gives milk and that is useful.
