it seems to me that some people believe in doing it one way whilst others follow another route.

can we eat rice or not?

can we eat vegetables or not?

one person has mentioned here that you can eat cucumbers and tomatoes but not vegetables. these two are technically classed as vegetables and not fruits so what is going on???

it is my last day tomororow but this is my first year so what i am learning from this web page will help me for the next 5 or more years.

during the day i have generally been eating fruit (fresh and dried), crisps with no salt and fruit yoghurt (although in the UK it is vital to check the ingredients as most have some form of sodium).

for my ektanu i have been having chips with dahi, jacket potatoe, parotha with ras...and more of the same...

what i would like is more ideas on different recepies.

this web site and all the opinions of those that have contributed have been very helpful to me -thank you one and all.

please do try and answer my questions if you can.

Hey Dimple

This is my 5th year doing the vrat, it's really hard to decide what u can and cannot eat. In the 1st year you have to decide if you are gonna eat rotli or rice when you do the fasting, when you pick one then that is all you can eat in the duration of the vrat. I chose rotli!

What i manly eat is potato shak, completley with no salt and very bland, or mogo shak. Mango russ is the best and easiet to eat, you can eat it with rotli or puri's. If you get hungry during the day eat some fruit or unsalted nuts, even pendo you can eat as tis jus made of milk. I make Mango smoothies as well, jus put half mango russ, half milks and some sugar then mix it with ice in a blender - taste really nice.

It's really limited to what you can eat, so it's best to jus stick to like ferrari shak and bland foods. You can bolied or grilled mogo as well during the day - you just can't put salt on it. But you can put limbu and mirchi on it.

Hope that's helped you /images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Hi,

ive been doing this vrat for 20 years, the vrat according to the Katha is for women to recieve good husbands and pray for their longivity, or for married women to keep a happy home but more so it s for women to recieve health progeny and good `santan' meaning children...

there are 2 types fasts Alluna (which is usually done a few days before Jai Parvatis vrat). Alluna is done by young girls (premenstruation) and Jai parvatis vrat can be done for all. both can be done for 5,7,11,21 years on the last year you have to invite married girls to eat, the number will depend on how many years you have fasted for. Alluna must be stopped after the menstrual cycle begins. In Alluna the fast is similar to Agyarus/Ekadasi and the child can eat have farari. However for jai parvatis vrat, farari is not allowed. and neither is gor, jaggery, peanuts and the usual non fasting foods. the puja is performed in the morning, where you offer flowers, fruit, coconut, and other things to parvati ma, shankar bhagvan and ganpatidada. after bathing the deities, the area is decorated and prasad is offered. the katha is then read and finished by the arti.

the vrat is for 5 days and on the 5th day, the ladies participating in the fast must do JAGRAAN. the women must not sleep and stay awake after sunrise, the night is spent with other girls or wmen fasting and (ideally) bhajanns and garba is done. however nowadays movies and dvds are watched. after sunrise the women must bathe and clear the puja room, a divo is lit and a small prayer thanking the lord for strengh and apologising for any mistakes made. therafter they can sleep or eat.

this is how ive been doing the vrat and how it has been passed on from generation to generation from my family. i personaly believe there is no right or wrong and heart must be in the right place. the days are about awakening the innersoul. the main perception is to have faith.

good luck girls and Jai Parvati Maa
