You can think that the cretionis vast and complex, to runa and maintainit needs many devas/devis. Hence the large number. No hindu wonders about all the names. Vishnu, Siva, Durga, Ganesh, and Surya are worshipped. Different incarnations (24 main) of vishnu have names. Vishnu and Siva each have atleast a thousand names.
