Vedas

By the Vedas no books are meant. They mean the accumulated treasury of spiritual laws discovered by different persons in different times.

 

The Hindus have received their religion through revelation, the Vedas. They hold that the Vedas are without beginning and without end. It may sound ludicrous to this audience, how a book can be without beginning or end. But by the Vedas no books are meant. They mean the accumulated treasury of spiritual laws discovered by different persons into different times. Just as the law of gravitation existed before its discovery, and exist if all humanity forgot it, so is it with the laws that govern the spiritual world. The moral, ethical, and spiritual relations between soul and soul and between individual spirits and the father of all spirits, were there before their discovery, and would remain even if we forgot them.

 

The discoverers of these laws are called Rishis, and we honour them as perfected beings. I am glad to tell this audience that some of the very greatest of them were women. Here it may be

 

Conversion

The Hindus, like the Jews, do not convert others; still gradually, other races are coming within Hinduism and adopting the manners and customs of the Hindus and falling into line with them.

 

Toleration?

Our watchword, then, will be acceptance, and not exclusion. Not only toleration, for so called toleration is often blasphemy, and I do not believe in it. I believe in acceptance. Why should I tolerate? Toleration means that, I think that you are wrong and I am just allowing you to live. Is it not a blasphemy to think that you and I are allowing others to live? I accept all religions that were in the past, and worship with them; I worship God with every one of them, in whatever form they worship Him.

 

Defining the Idea of God

With the Hindus you will find one national idea- spirituality. In no other religion, in no other sacred books of the world, will you find so much energy spent in defining the idea of God.

 

Pythagoras and Kapila

There is no philosophy in the world that is not indebted to Kapila. Pythagoras came to India and studied this philosophy, and that was the beginning of the philosophy of the Greeks. Later, it formed the Alexandrian school and still later the Gnostics. It became divided into two; one part went to Europe and Alexandria, and the other remained in India; and out of this, the system of Vyasa was developed.

every religion is god and prophet centered, prophet means "who speaks purely for god"... so also the spiritual master, the acharya, is a prophet (if he's purely connected with god... otherwise he's a cheater)

But the crux of the matter here is we do not glorify our prophet. We only take the essence of the message. We do not say only through this rishi or that rishi we can go to haven or only through Baba, Ramakrishna Paramamsa, Swami Ramalingam, Arbindo or other divine souls we can reach haven? Look at the Christians, they say salvation is only through Jesus and the muslims say Mohammaed is the last prophet and none other after him and they only stcik to the Hadis and not the Koran. And than Buddha, he actualy came to teach the way of dharma but his followers are now praying to him instead of God, but even than we consider Buddha as God ncarnate. Don't we? You need to go deep don't just swim on the surface...

the problem is exclusivism, fanaticism... only through my prophet you find god.. this is the problem, not that hinduisms does not care for masters and saints (i mean real masters and real saints.. not some of the fellows you have called divine in your message)

SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA [1836-1886]

Sri Ramakrishna appeared at a time when British rule and education system added to a few centuries of degeneration of the grand religion of the Hindus, Sanatan Dharma. The Sanatan Dharma was shaken at its very foundation. Among this utter confusion, came Sri Ramakrishna.

To quote from Swami Vivekananda 'This epochal new dispensation is the harbinger of great good to the whole world, specially to India; and the inspirer of this dispensation, Sri Bhagavan Ramakrishna, is the reformed and remodelled manifestation of all the past great epoch-makers in religion.'

Sri Ramakrishna invariably influences the spiritual thought process of our time whether we are aware of it or not. For the first time in the spiritual history of mankind, faithful records of his life and sayings are available through wonderful books namely, The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by M and Sri Sri Ramakrishna Leelaprasanga (Sri Ramakrishna - the Great Master by Swami Saradanandaji Maharaj. Interested readers can go to RKM sites like www.advaitaonline.com or www.ramakrishna.org for more details). Millions of devotees have been inspired by these two books primarily. Through his God-intoxicated life Sri Ramakrishna proved that the revelation of God takes place at all times and that God-realization is not the monopoly of any particular age, country, or people. In him, deepest spirituality and broadest catholicity stood side by side. The God-man of nineteenth-century India did not found any cult, nor did he show a new path to salvation. His message was his God-consciousness. When God-consciousness falls short, traditions become dogmatic and oppressive and religious teachings lose their transforming power.

When the flower blossoms honey-bee automatically comes. Sri Ramakrishna's divine personality attracted people from far and near, men and women, young and old, philosophers and theologians, philanthropists and humanists, atheists and agnostics, Hindus and Brahmos, Christians and Muslims, seekers of truth of all races, creeds and castes. His small room in the Dakshineshwar temple garden on the outskirts of Kolkata became a confluence of all religions. Everyone who came to him felt uplifted by his profound God-consciousness, infinite love, and universal outlook. Each seeker saw in him the highest manifestation of his own ideal. By coming near him the impure became pure, the pure became purer, and the sinner was transformed into a saint.

The greatest contribution of Sri Ramakrishna to the modern world is his message of the harmony of religions. He reiterated what Sri Krishna preached in Gita 'Ye yatha maam prapadyante....' To Sri Ramakrishna all religions are the revelation of God in His diverse aspects to satisfy the manifold demands of human minds. Like different photographs of a building taken from different angles, different religions give us the pictures of one truth from different standpoints. Sri Ramakrishna's famous stories of Bahurupi and Blind Men Meeting An Elephant illustrate this wonderfully. They are not contradictory but complementary. Sri Ramakrishna faithfully practiced the spiritual disciplines of different religions and came to the realization that all of them lead to the same goal. Thus he declared, "As many faiths, so many paths." The paths vary, but the goal remains the same. Harmony of religions is not uniformity; it is unity in diversity. It is not a fusion of religions, but a fellowship of religions based on their common goal, communion with God. This harmony is to be realized by deepening our individual God-consciousness.

In the present-day world, threatened by nuclear war and torn by religious intolerance, Sri Ramakrishna's message of harmony gives us hope and shows the way. May his life and teachings ever inspire us.

Born in 1823 near Chidambaram, TamilNadu, India, Vallalar lived the early part of his life in Chennai and settled in later Vadalur in 1867. He had a divine call in him asa representative of the earth and felt himself an instrument of the Divine for the universal manifestation of the death - conquering Vast Grace -Light on the earth. He saw the vision of a divine evolution of the earthly life in the wake of its Manifestation. He realized the supreme and universal Divine integrally and his body became transformed and filled with Light so much so it did not cast its shadow on the ground. He eventually attained a transformed and divinised golden physical body, deathless and ever indestructible, shadow less and sleepless, and full of Light.

 

Amrita and blissful energies and with a potential power to resurrect the dead into the bodily life. He preached deathless of body of the people and said that it was by an error they are consenting to death. After about a year or two of attaining the Deathless body, he sacrificed it by dematerialization in 1874 in the very concrete Presence of the Divine at his place in order to make the God of Vast Grace - Light manifest so as to stay on and directly rule the earth and to enable him to enter into all the physical bodies universally.

 

Saint Vallalar of Vadalur stands unique in annals of spiritual and religious history, for he not only taught a simple, down to earth, rational philosophy such as could be comprehended by the simple amongst us, but also practiced what he preached, in full public view, even as he lived and moved like any mortal in our society during the last century. Preaching the philosophy of compassion coupled with dedication and prayer to God. He demonstrated by example what man can and should achieve in this very birth, through Universal kindness and generosity.

 

 

Saint Vallalar made an incisive analysis of existing philosophies, strengthened the basic concepts and laid stress on aspects that needed the greatest emphasis in or times. Shorn of the complexities and nuances or obscure metaphysical that are beyond the understanding of the 'work a day', the teaching of Saint Vallalar are simple and straight forward and appeal to the ordinary folks directly as being reasonable and credible. What is more, his assertions of the feasibility of salvation for all people through the practice of compassion, right in this very birth, here and now, gave them a reassuring feeling and a new confidence in themselves which greatly attracted them to the path of Sanmargha shown by him.

 

Saint Vallalar’s revelation encompassing as it does, the old and the new, the east and the west, the past and the present, is verily and gospel of the common man, for its outreach is at once vast and varied, is couched in simple and strikingly convincing language, as though it was penned by a common man.

 

Unraveling the potential verities of godhead in all living creatures, Saint Vallalar preach against dogmas and blind customs that had obscured the original jewels of wisdom immanent in early scriptures. Nevertheless his was a mission of kindness and compassion, persuasion, example rather than enforcement. There is no room for extreme enmity and quarrel, malice or disaffection in his dispensation.

 

The cardinal tenets of Vallalar's teaching are enumerated here in a brief manner:

 

1. There is but one God for all.

 

2. He is in the form of Supreme Grace Light and is to be worshipped in this form.

 

3. Worship of minor and sacrificial offering by killing animals is forbidden.

 

4. Meat eating is forbidden.

 

5. Differential treatment to persons on the basis of their different religions should be eschewed.

 

6. Caste distinctions should be abolished.

 

7. Recognized the right of Universal kinship of all souls, one must treat all living creatures with loving care, holding all life as par with one's own life.

 

8. The path of compassion, alleviating the suffering and the hunger of the

'have nots' is the one and only key to salvation.

 

9. Mythologies and scriptures (Purana and shastaras) cannot reveal the final conclusive truth.

 

10. A general broad and liberal outlook is required in all matters, all round.

Yes, very well observed. While other religions have made personality cults out of their prophets, Hindus for a long time has managed to steer clear of this. But this has changed in the past few hundred years where you've got some followers of some holy men claiming their guru was really an incarnation of God! So in a way Hinduism has been degraded by some of it's own followers.

 

But the reason I think we didn't glorify our sages before this degredation is because we have had many great sages - not one or two, but hundreds like Vyasa, Patanjali, etc but they have never promoted themselves just their teachings. That's why their teachings are remembered and are more important than them.

True :

 

1. For Christians - NO other Salvations other than by Jesus.

2. For Muslims - You MUST believe that Muhammad is God's prophet or you will not be saved.

3. Muslims follow Muhammad and his way of life, NOT what God have taught them since Moses. Matter a fact, they already broke 2/3 of all the Moses's Laws.

False : Buddha is God or God incarnated.

 

In Gita, it is already stated that after Sri Krishna, He will come as Kalki alone. ALL others who proclaim themselves as God incarnated are liars.

 

Also, Hindus are the ones who pull Buddha into Godhood in attempt to recapture Hindus who were leaving Hindusm to embrace Buddhism (which probably to them looked like atheism).

 

Also, many Asians honor their parents and teachers who passed away in shrines. It is common ways in Asia and that is what Buddhists are doing today - honor Gautama Buddha as a teacher, NOT as God.

Now, question here is whether a spiritual master is a self-realized soul and whether he had seen the truth or not.

 

Unfortunately nowadays, no one dares to walk to a so-called Spiritual master and question him (like what Moses questions God and what Arjuna did with Sri Krishna). Many followers follow blindly to a person who proclaim spiritual master and thus cheated.

 

Latest one in Malaysia is a Muslim who come forward and proclaim he was the founder of Hindusm, which he founded 3,000 years ago (I think he is proclaiming himself as Sage Vyasa here).

 

Many Hindus here believed this cheater and even went to extend of washing his feet and seeking his blessing. It was so disgusting, I thought Muslims were riddiculing Hindus till someone else confirmed it a few days back. Felt like wanted to slap each and everyone who went and washed his feet.

Not difficult. First thing a person should do before he judge whether the Master is worth to teach him is what is the Master's attitude is.

 

Many Spiritual Masters put calm and goodness face in front but do the opposite behind. A person who want to become his disciple must first see how the Master lives, works, whether what he preachs is same as how he lives and such.

 

Common traits of a Cult is, the Master is above all others and therefore, beyond judgement of others below. There will be heiraki of power from the Master, 1st Disciple, 2nd and so on to the lowest and it is the lowest one who needs to make all sort of sacrifice and such for beneficials of those above them.

 

Such people who claims to be Masters should be avoided as Cult followers and the society must be educated of existence of such people.

Wrong ... Gita said Trust and Surrendor to Him (God), it didn't say anything like follow some Swami and he will lead you to God. Even among Lord Shiva's worshippers, they worship Lord Shiva directly without some Swami in the middle.

 

What Hindus doing now is to believe in others and do not take time to research, learn and worse of all, THINK. They want short-cuts to Liberation and hope Swamis could show that without them doing much work. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

 

So where did this practise of looking for Swamis, washing their feets etc comes from? Gurus are those who are humble themselves and become servant to God and His children, NOT act like God themselves.

I haven't scrolled all the comments entered on this query.

But here I want to explain my opinion.

 

Hinduism explains the transcendental states of the one in reaching the God. And the steps to follow by one in reaching the God.

It covers the real World too saying how you can get rid of Material World and how one has to behave in the worldly matters etc., (in Ramayana, Baghavatgita etc.). But all this have a base line with Vedas. Vedas explain the one's activities in reaching the God.

 

Coming to the case of Prophet, one who follows Hinduism has to get guidance from prophet. Because, when one transcending to God there are lot of pleasures/emotions he will come across. And he unknowingly tries to dwell oneself into them.Which the one can never be out of it in most of the cases?

 

One who follows Hinduism has to have a real Guru in attaining the God. Once the one has felt the God or he sees himself in God, then he becomes the real Gnani (knower). Then what ever he tells will be truth and real. This one can become real Guru and help others in attaining the same.

 

So, as per my visualization this is happening from quiet long time in India. But unfortunate to India, in last 500 years Rulers from Out of Country came to India spoiled the spirituality in Hinduism.

 

And the Very unfortunate thing in India is The EDUCATED PERSONS in the last decades started believing the Material World and got attached to the material things and dwelled themselves into delusions.

The Educated never turned up to see the Religious Scientists existed in India.

 

Ok,

Coming to other religions,

Buddhism - also says about the same what Vedas say. It also say about the one has to attain the state of Buddha (God) the Seedless Samadhi.

 

Christianity or Mohamadism they will talk about the real World. How the one has to behave in the world and make the life so pleasant living together.

 

Here, I want to conclude,

Hinduism is not God Centered; it deals the subjects, how to live in real world and also how to attain God.

By the way, Buddha didn't teach about God. He didn't believe in the soul either, he thought mankind was just a collection of habits. It is only some Vedantic thinkers who thought that Buddha reaching enlightenment is the same as Moksha or becoming one with Brahman. Maybe it is, but they suggest that Buddha didn't know it or think it had anything to do with God.

You are right. Buddhism has no god

 

Advaita moksha is more like going back in ocean. Sac cid ananda. Become one . Buddhism nirvana is bit different, is like candle that go out.

"Seeing" God in this statement is a relative matter. If you think what you see is God, then you must first know what is (characteristics of) God.

 

Some sees Him as the Universe (myself included - since I believe in Logics and Reasons which could used to find Him). Some sees Him in others (Humanitarians), Some (faithless ones) only sees Him in rocks and statues and other even more faithless ones deny His existence all together.

 

In that context ... who are you going to refer to as a Guru? One who sees Him in the Universe, in others, in Stone or one who deny Him altogether and cooks up something he thinks is logic?

Yup, Surrending to God means losing Oneself to His Love completely, not blinded by arrogance, pride and delusion (of a person's practise) and proclaim the person as some sort of God or God's accquaintes.

 

Remember the story of a Cat who sees a Sage performing tapas? It decided to mimic the Sage and stood silently, mouse fooled by his acts come to pay homage and got eaten by it.

 

This story is hand-crafted in one of the ancient temples in South India ... Tanjaur if not mistaken (saw it in Discovery Channel once).

It is in love that religion exists and not in ceremony, in the pure and sincere love in the heart. Unless a man is pure in body and mind, his coming into a temple and worshipping Shiva is useless. The prayers of those that are pure in the mind and body will be answered by Shiva, and those that are impure and yet try to teach religion to others will fail in the end. External worship is only a symbol of internal worship; but internal worship and purity are the real things. Without them, external worship would be of no avail. Therefore you must all try to remember this.

 

This is the gist of all worship – to be

pure and to do good to others.

 

People have become so degraded in this Kali Yuga that they think they can do anything, and then they can go to a holy place, and their sins will be forgiven. If a man goes with an impure mind into a temple, he adds to the sins that he had already, and goes home a worse man than when he left it. Tirtha (place of pilgrimage) is a place which is full of holy things and holy men. But if holy people live in a certain place, and if there is no temple there, even that is a Tirtha. If unholy people live in a place where there may be a hundred temples, the Tirtha has vanished from that place. And it is most difficult to live in a Tirtha; for if sin is committed in an ordinary place it can easily be removed, but sin committed in a Tirtha cannot be removed. This is the gist of all worship – to be pure and to do good to others.

 

He who sees Shiva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Shiva; and if he sees Shiva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary. He who has served and helped one poor man seeing Shiva in him, without thinking of his caste, or creed, or race, or anything, with him Shiva is more pleased than with the man who sees Him only in temples.

 

Those who serve the servants of

God are His greatest servants.

 

A rich man had a garden and two gardeners. One of these gardeners was very lazy and did not work; but when the owner came to the garden, the lazy man would get up and fold his arms and say : “How beautiful is the face of my master”, and dance before him. The other gardener would not talk much, but would work hard, and produce all sorts of fruits and vegetables which he would carry on his head to his master who lived a long way off. Of these two gardeners, which would be more beloved of his master? Shiva is that master, and this world is His garden, and there are two sorts of gardeners here; the one who is lazy, hypocritical, and does nothing, only talking about Shiva’s beautiful eyes and nose and other features; and the other, who is taking care of Shiva’s children, all those that are poor and weak, all animals, and all His creation. Which of these would be the more beloved of Shiva? Certainly he that serves His children. He who wants to serve the father must serve the children first. He who wants to serve Shiva must serve His children – must serve all creatures in this world first. It is said in the Shastras (scriptures) that those who serve the servants of God are His greatest servants. So you will bear this in mind.

 

Let me tell you again that you must be pure and help any one who comes to you, as much as lies in your power. And this is good Karma. By the power of this, the heart becomes pure (Chitta-shuddhi), and then Shiva who is residing in everyone will become manifest. He is always in the heart of everyone. If there is dirt and dust on a mirror, we cannot see our image. So ignorance and wicked ness are the dirt and dust that are on the mirror of our hearts. Selfishness is the chief sin, thinking of ourselves first. He who thinks, “I will eat first, I will have more money than others, and I will possess everything”, he who thinks, “I will get to heaven before others, I will get Mukti (liberation) before others” is the selfish man. The unselfish man says, “I will be last, I do not care to go to heaven, I will even go to hell if by doing so I can help my brothers.”

 

Unselfishness is the test of religion

 

This unselfishness is the test of religion. He who has more of this unselfishness is more spiritual and nearer to Shiva than anybody else, whether he knows it or not. And if a man is selfish, even though he has visited all the temples, seen all the places of pilgrimage, and painted himself like a leopard, he is still further off from Shiva.

Buddha didn't accept or deny existence of God/s and didn't think that praying to God alone (like some religions does today) will help people become happier.

 

And Buddha stated that he did not see anything within a person which could survive death of a body, which means that the Mind and Duality which exists in all Man is false, so is Ego, Emotions, Attachments etc.

 

In same way, in Gita, it is said that Soul and the Body is separate. The Soul can influence the body but the body do not influence the Soul, therefore, logically speaking, whatever which is effected by the chemical changed in a body is not permanent.

Yes you are true that Gita first talk about surrendering to God.

Here for a person who is completely into BhagavadGita/ Ramayanam, in his perspective transformation is not right word to define, may Evolving will suit the word.

One can evolve, travel and mix with the God.

 

I heard few lines like He is everywhere(omnipresent), and everyone & everything in the last mix into him.

In his viswaroopam, we can see all Oceans, planets, stars etc., where all come and mix into him.

I think in Gita the explanations are like, the way the people has to work, steps to evolve and at last mixing into Lord Krishna.

 

But as you refered here, Surrendering to God.

This is a valuable line, where One has to surrender to God. First step to take the path in reaching God is Surrendering to God. And in the way he starts evolving step by step and at last reaches God. After reaching/seeing God may he will realize that he is in God.

 

These are my expectations & opinions any way. Person who has experieced may give the real truth.

 

Here what is my opinion to conclude is...

One has to travel hard path and slowly get evolved and merge into God.

Basically....hinduism is based on principles.....not on personalities.....

It is immaterial whether ramakrishna paramhansa was an avatar.....but he revealed to vivekananda in his deathbed when vivekananda thought in his mind "if this person, at this deathbed...so weak can now stand up and say i am god i will believe him" and suddenly ramakrishna stood up and said "Oh Naren....do u still dont believe me.....he who was Krishna, And he who was Rama, are now in the body of Ramakrishna but Not in the vedantic sense".....for according to vedanta everyone is potentially divine.....

 

And some person......has mentioned that the geeta says last avatar will be Kalki....it is a puranic mythological tale....nowhere in the Geeta or in any of srutis(i.e. vedas, upanishads, geeta) is it mentioned that kalki would be the last avatar

{Buddhism - also says about the same what Vedas say. It also say about the one has to attain the state of Buddha (God) the Seedless Samadhi.}

 

I am not saying here that Vedas what they are saying is exactly the same as Buddhism say. I was just telling the essence of the whole story.

 

Yes u r right Buddhism dont have God. Every person in Buddism tries to attain the state of Buddha.

The word Buddha may be understood wrongly here, the big status across the world are of Goutham Buddha. Goutham has reached a state called Buddha.

Buddhism tells about the state of Buddha, nothing but reaching God. The ways of Vedas and Buddism are almost nearly parallel.

 

The difference I feel between these ways are...

Goudham Buddha to his people after reaching Seedless Samadhi, he says dont dwell yourself into Buddha unless you make all the people in the world have attained the same state - Seedless Samadhi.

In Vedas, People can go ahead and reach the state of God by reaching Nirvana and dissolve into it.

we are already mixed, because we are part of him.. not something different. But we are also different because we are not supreme as he is. otherwise we weren't illuded by maya.

 

we are simultaneously one and different with god, the difference gives the possibility to relationate with Him, the All Attractive, the one who has all beauties... and there's nothing more blissful, actually there's nothing beyond..

 

to become god or one with god would be very sad.. only "one".. no love, no bliss, no dynamism, no relationship, no variety... only loneliness.. eternal sad loneliness..

 

actually a hell..
