OT PayPal scam alert

I do apologize for the cross posting in advance, but I almost got caught in a

phishing attempt and I'm passing along the alert to everyone else to be extra

safe.

Earlier today I got an e-mail claiming to be from PayPal. According to the

e-mail my account had been moved to 'limited' access. It said to log in and

follow the steps listed. Naturally since I wasn't fully awake I followed the

link and logged in.

It was a scam as they wanted me to 're-enter' all my account information

including mailing and billing address, credit card info, etc. I left the page

open and opened a new page the way I usually would for PayPal and reported the

scam, but I am passing along the heads up and warning so no one else gets stung.

Whilst agreeing with what is said here, do check carefully, as I received a

similar email and deleted it, only to find the following week that my

account had been compromised and someone had tried to buy an item from E-Bay

using my details. Unknown to me they had also hacked my E-Bay accound and

bid on items and won a games console, which they then bought with a stolen

credit card.l have spent a couple of hours this afternoon giving a statement

to the police, plus I had all the hassle of getting my E-Bay account back

again.

I get these once in a while, the funny thing is, I don't use this email address

for paypal, I have a separate one for buying online etc, so I know it's not

legit. I have the address in my contact list for reporting paypal spoof email

(spoof), I just forward it to them. They send a response, telling me

that it was indeed a phishing email. I like to think it helps, even just a

little bit.

It's too bad these " talented " people can't use their abilities for something

good....sigh.

So is this the first time you've gotten one of those? I get five a day,

from PayPal, from eBay, from banks I've never had any dealings with, etc.

It's pathetic.

First for PayPal, which since I was logged in and out over the last few days

did make me think it might, small chance, be legit. I've seen ones from

banks that I've never had an account with and have to laugh at those.

But I guess it's a case of 'tis the season'. *sighs* I know a few years ago

the scammers were calling people, reading their credit card number off to

them and asking them to 'verify' the three or four digit code on the back of

the card, claiming to be from the credit card company.

When I was working retail, I took a phone call one Saturday from someone

claiming to be from the credit card processing company and said that they

had just had some kind of incident in which they lost some data. He asked me

to verify the last three transactions and the credit card numbers (I don't

know if it was just our system or all systems at that time, but the entire

credit card number did show up on the retailer's copy of the receipt -- but

only the last four digits on the customer's). I laughed at him! I said do

you really think I'm going to give you that info over the phone? I told him

to give me a number to call him back. Oh no, he had to get off right away --

he'd call me back. Shocker -- he didn't! :)

I think even the teenagers working would have put him on hold while they

asked another employee or the owner what to do -- hope so, anyway! No caller

id info, of course, so nothing we could do about it. I did call the credit

card processing company and tell them about the incident, not sure there was

anything they could do either, but alert other retail customers...

Whenever you think it might be a phishing email from Paypal you should forward

it to spoof. They will write back to you to say thank you for

sending it to them & they will work on disabling the sender.
