Hi Peter

Here's a link for Dragonforce. If you don't like the excellent

vocals, then either marvel at the length of Herman Li's hair, or fast

forward to the guitar solos.

I suppose the guitar playing if not original ( Eddie Van Halen spawned a million imitators with their double hammer ons ) is technically proficient, but it just leaves me cold - speed for the sake of it/how fast can you solo has never been my thang. But the song didnt do much for me either, sorry each to their own I suppose, I prefr something with a bit more attitude/originality, or maybe I`m just getting old!

What label do they give this type of cock rock? I ask because I have been reading my daughters kerrang magazine , and am amazed by how many types of metal get a genre now.Everything from Dark Metal to Post Industrial metal, jeesh I remember when everything was heavy metal, and all this was trees, and a loaf of Hovis was delivered by a boy on a bike!

LOL - the guitar playing is technically proficient - so much so that you couldn't diss it :-) As you say, each to their own, but personally I like my music to be like music, and usually when I have heard people mention music with 'attitude' it turns out to be a lot of shouting protest. What sort of attitude do you like with your music?

The genres expand quite quickly, so I'm not sure - I would call them power metal, but could be wrong - a rose by any other name etc.

p.p.s. Is there any music with originality? I don't think it has anything to do with getting old, otherwise I would like the same music as you!

Hi Peter

Actually, Eddie wasn't original with his double hammer ons - they've been used for centuries (possibly millennia) in Spanish music.

well, by that logic, he wasn't original in his use of strings,

either...or the guitar in the first place.

no one said he was the first to do this, including him. check out

steve hackett's work in genesis, for example. however, no one will

deny that evh created a huge uproar in the rock guitar world with his

unique approach to left hand style. as a twelve year old kid in

southern CA when eddie hit big, i can say that i've never experience

another guitar player that so overwhelmed me and everyone else. older

players say the same thing for hendrix, so there you go.

I think this has a lot to do with where you live. Van Halen became huge in America, and were fairly popular among rock fans in the UK. However, that doesn't mean that EVH was better or more imaginative than any of the other numerous guitarists doing similar things - he was just more famous. I think in most European countries (outside the UK), you'll find that the likes of Axel Rudi Pell and Yngwie Malmsteen were the "guitar heroes" of the same period. But aside from them, there's the likes of Chris Impelliterri, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani who IMHO are better and more imaginative guitarists. Not to mention the hundreds of guitarists who are known as members of groups, rather than as individuals, who tend to be better musicians as they are oriented toward group based music rather than showing off how fast they can widdle!

Incidentally, when I first started getting into playing rock guitar, it took me about 10 minutes to work out and play some of EVH's "most impressive" solos. Took me several weeks to master some of the Metallica guitar work!

I agree, it is a technique used in spanish guitar, but that form of guitar and its players never had the wide appeal and hence the media coverage of rock music as did Van Halen. Thats why he probably influenced so many and introduced them to that technique.

I find it quite fascinating reading that silly magazine, which still perpetuates the rock star cliches "sex, drugs and rock and roll"........which worries me sometimes as some of the articles use a lot of sexually graphic phrases, and I know a lotof kids buy it , makes me cringe sometimes, joys of being a parent eh?

Maybe attitude is wrong, maybe just a little bit of individuality/originality?

well, yngwie and those guys came later than EVH. he matured

and popularized that style in the late 70s before any of them we on

the scene. in fact, i highly doubt that vai, satch, or yngwie were, as

you say, " doing similar things " when Van Halen I was

released in early 1978.

just like elvis didn't " invent " rock and rock, and he's

surely not the sine qua non for rock music as a whole, he's still

" the king " , much like eddie's status in that sort of rock

guitar style.

i love eddie and saw the recent david lee roth tour up in LA.

great fun. but right now my fav rock guys are steve howe, hackett, and

fripp. see a pattern?

It has all been done to a certain extent, but I just prefer artists that sound just a little individual.

So whats the last album everyone listened to?

p.p.s. Is there any music with originality? I don't think it has anything to do with getting old, otherwise I would like the same music as you!

We're off to the Opeth/Arch Enemy gig this weekend - neither are your types, I know, but we will thoroughly enjoy it.

I suppose the guitar playing if not original ( Eddie Van Halen spawned a million imitators with their double hammer ons ) is technically proficient, but it just leaves me cold - speed for the sake of it/how fast can you solo has never been my thang. But the song didnt do much for me either, sorry each to their own I suppose, I prefr something with a bit more attitude/originalit y, or maybe I`m just getting old!

Hi PeterHere's a link for Dragonforce. If you don't like the excellent vocals, then either marvel at the length of Herman Li's hair, or fast forward to the guitar solos.http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=0jgrCKhxE1s Jo@gro ups.com, Peter VV <swpgh01 > wrote:>> Dont know dragonforce, so only managed to take about a minute of the brass band. Agreed, but Eddie brought it to the attention of a whole new generation, and audience. I am just so fed up of hearing it!

But then I am an old grump!

Actually, Eddie wasn't original with his double hammer ons - they've been used for centuries (possibly millennia) in Spanish music.

I do see a pattern. Do you not like any younger, more modern guitarists/musicians?

I am not a musician so cannot comment too much on technicalities, but ..... I don't find Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing very interesting. Clever or not, he doesn't hold my attention. I can't even remember most of his tracks. The only one that springs to mind is Jump - so going back to the origins of the discussion - no comparison to Dragonforce, and sounds nothing like them.

well, yngwie and those guys came later than EVH. he matured and popularized that style in the late 70s before any of them we on the scene. in fact, i highly doubt that vai, satch, or yngwie were, as you say, "doing similar things" when Van Halen I was released in early 1978.

just like elvis didn't "invent" rock and rock, and he's surely not the sine qua non for rock music as a whole, he's still "the king", much like eddie's status in that sort of rock guitar style.

i love eddie and saw the recent david lee roth tour up in LA. great fun. but right now my fav rock guys are steve howe, hackett, and fripp. see a pattern?

Took me several weeks to master some of the Metallica guitar work!

sure. i like petrucci, i like the guy in opeth, i like the

guitars in lamb of god...but as a player, they don't influence me at

all. that's where jazz players, 70s prog dudes, zappa, etc., come

in.

i'm in a big lap steel phase right now. i've got a 1952 fender 8 string double neck, a late 50s gibson br-6 (just like this guy: http://umanovguitar s.com/store/ details.asp? prodid=3274 & cat=660 & path=600,660) and a new weird chinese knockaround. ever play a lap?

Agreed, but the solos use the same techniques that hark back to Eddies with a bit of Schenker thrown in.
