Dear Merritt,

Could this Cholera outbreak of Vietnam serve as a model against the

consumption of Dog meat in countries where the Animal Husbandry does not

recognize/ promote Dog meat.

For example Nagaland & northeastern region of India and other places?

 

Where can one find hard facts & scientific data cautioning the threat of

disease outbreak (if any) due to Dog meat consumption.

It would be good to have something from a higher authority such as the WHO

etc.

 

Then one can send letters to the state governments here asking them to put a

complete BAN on the sale/ consumption of Dog meat.

 

This may not go a long way in finding immediate relief for the homeless Dogs

here but we can anyways pull up the administration and the government for

putting the lives of the public at risk.

The two items I have forwarded to the AAPN list in the past

few days are the first I have seen about cholera transmission

associated with eating dogs. They also appear to be the first

information that the International Society for Infectious Diseases

has received.

 

On April 30 I forwarded to the AAPN list " Rabies risk is

medically identified from eating dogs & cats, " from the May 2009

edition of ANIMAL PEOPLE. This article cited all of the medical

journal studies that I know about which associate dog-eating and

cat-eating with rabies risk.

 

Evidence is rapidly accumulating to indicate that eating dogs

and cats is an unhealthy process, but this industry has only been

studied by epidemiologists for about 10 years now, and only as a

minor part of the work of those who have looked at it.

 

I will continue to forward information as I receive it.

Yes I can recall your earlier post on rabies risk.

 

Please see if in your next/ or forthcoming editions this issue of

Non regularized/ legal Dog meat eating regions/ countries/ states and the

possible threats they carry for the society as a whole can be exposed in the

media via 'Animal People'.

 

If the Nation heads of the respective countries can have sleepless nights

out of H1N1 & H5N1 etc....the Dog issue should also be smartly tabled across

to their offices.

 

I can help you out with whatever information I have and in case you need

anything more on Dog meat/ trade from this part of India.

 

We should try and get more inputs from places where Dog meat is not allowed/

permitted by the Government but is consumed by a healthy percentage of

people.

 

We can then maybe have a Map highlighting the legal/ illegal Dog eating

zones across the globe (zeroing down to as close as states/ towns/

municipalities/ villages, in case that is possible).

 

That document can be circulated to institutions such as WHO etc who can then

put pressure on the respective nations to act.

 

Also we on out part can then locally carry that document/ report along with

the letters asking for the BAN.

 

I can assure you at least in India this exercise may bring some

positive results. Because here the possibility of regularizing Dog meat

seems unlikely, so a push for a BAN with a scientific approach may work.
