Wheatgrass Juicing 101 An Introduction to Wheatgrass Many people are finding out for themselves that drinking grass juice is not as crazy as it seems! Many claim the taste and smell of Wheatgrass Juice are must like the smells and tastes you would experience when mowing your lawn. Wheatgrass Juice has been taunted as the “Lawn” Cocktail. Often, I stroll by our local Jamba Juice Bar and catch a glimpse of the Wheatgrass Phenomenon. I watch as a person is given a small stylish tray upon which is set a tiny one ounce cup of dark green liquid, and to its side is a slice of orange. Quickly the person plugs his/her nose and swallows the ounce of juice… then so fast, almost not visible to the human eye, they propel the entire orange into their mouth. It is great! In the following paragraphs, I shall give you an introduction to Wheatgrass Juice: how it got started, and how you can get started! What are the health benefits of this ubiquitous substance called grass? WHEATGRASS HISTORY In 1930, Charles F. Schnabel started feeding his family grass. Before anyone else, he initiated the movement for the human consumption of grass and devoted his entire life to promoting its nutritional and health benefits. He knew from his experiments with animals and his research in the laboratory that it boosts nutrition, builds good blood and strengthens immunity. He is a forgotten hero, but he is remembered for how close he came to making wheat grass a household food. In the 1940's a man by the name of Charles Kettering (former Chairman of the Board of General Motors) donated money for the study of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll was studied intensively by medical doctors using FDA required standards i.e. double blind studies, etc. Sometime during the 1940's a lady by the name of Ann Wigmore healed herself of cancer from the weeds she found in vacant lots in Boston. She started the Ann Wigmore institute and began treating people with wheatgrass and the living food diet. Since Ann Wigmore's time, a Japanese researcher named Yoshihide Hagiwara has done research on the healing properties of barley grass. He began to study Chinese medicine and found that the father of Chinese medicine said, " It is the diet which maintains true health and becomes the best drug. " Hippocrates, considered the father of western medicine, said basically the same thing. Ann Wigmore originally named her institute after Hippocrates-–based on his teaching that the body can act as its own physician when provided with the proper tools (living organic nourishment), used in the way nature intended–unprocessed and uncooked. Of all the grasses, Barley grass has probably been researched more, due to the efforts of Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, President of the Hagiwara Institute of Health in Japan. Hagiwara reports that he researched over 150 different plants over a period of 13 years. He found that in barley was the most excellent source of nutrients that the body needs for growth, repair and well-being. Wheatgrass is so easy to grow! It can be grown indoors or outdoors and only takes 7-10 days. The benefits of taking 2 ounces of wheatgrass daily are phenomenal. Countless people have started taking a shot a day to improve their energy. You’ll only have to try it a couple of times to realize the benefits. Wheatgrass is growing in a small garden tray with organic soil and minerals. You can literally grow wheatgrass for pennies a day. It is harvested when it reaches 7 inches tall in about 10 days. If you want to find out more about wheatgrass, visit our website at www.wheatgrasskits.com. Go to the information library on the front page of the website and click on newsletter archive. There you will find about 30 different articles telling all about wheatgrass, barleygrass, using the correct growing medium, using earthworms, the Ann Wigmore diet and much more. Article by Kaitlin Moller, owner of Wheatgrasskits.com Touch for a New Generation ADD, ADHD, hyperactivity and a host of other behavioral dis-eases labeling children who are excessively energetic and have difficulty concentrating, socializing and remaining calm are on the rise. Parents feel helpless faced with the standard solution to medicate their child with psychological drugs. A simpler solution is to take into consideration the environment in which the child is developing. It is easy for us to be consumed by concerns of money, work, health, food, relationships, etc. There are so many “adult” problems and stress that we often forget that our children also suffer from stress, their own and that which they are feeling from us. “What stress could a child possibly have?!” Let’s think about where the child has come from: A child, in the womb, does not differentiate between his mother and himself. He sees it all as one. Not only does he receive what the mother eats, drinks and consumes, but he feels what the mother is feeling. Upon birth, he is suddenly separated from his “other half”. The following hours, days, weeks and months structure the child’s understanding of who he is and either rectifies or reinforces any separation anxiety he experienced. If for some reason the parent is unavailable or under considerable stress (due to illness, work, finances, depression, etc.), the child naturally feels this and is unable to replace feelings of separation and loss with feelings of wholeness and confidence. This stress may later create feelings of anxiety when faced with new activities, people and environments such as school, social events, shopping, etc. In addition, today’s hi-tech society brings an overwhelming amount of stimulation. The child who lived not so long ago in a dark, gentle and safe environment where all external sounds were muffled as he was continually rocked and massaged by the movements of his mother’s body, is now faced with bright lights, loud voices, blaring televisions, poking and prodding and a host of machines intended to stimulate his senses (from beeping monitors to vibrating massage beds, barking clock radios to video games). Sensory overload creates stress and anxiety. What does stress do? In the first phase of stress, the body stimulates the adrenals into a “fight of flight” response. This puts the body and the senses on hi-alert and awareness is enhanced, so a certain amount of stress can be positive. However, it must be followed by a period of relaxation and recuperation. If the stress continues, hormones, which once heightened the body’s defenses, are over-produced and stall or stop physical and neurological development. They interfere with the body’s immune system and ability to fight off infection, cancer, and deal with pain. In addition, stress over-works the liver and pancreas, contributing to sugar imbalances and diabetes. It over-stimulates the thyroid, creating fatigue, depression and weight gain and diminishes our senses causing loss of appetite, speech problems, comprehension difficulties, hypersensitivity… So what is a parent to do? Massage! One of the greatest healing tools a parent has is the ability to touch, caress and care for a child. By spending a few minutes each day or an hour a week of uninterrupted, focused, one-on-one attention with your child, you can reduce the negative affects of stress. Attention accompanied by caring touch multiplies the following benefits by up to 80%. § Clearer communication and a feeling of bonding will develop between parent and child as a mutual understanding of each other is reinforced. § Massage enhances his intellectual development and helps him learn to focus and concentrate by stimulating neural messages between his skin and brain. § The child learns to relax and set clear boundaries for positive touch at a young age. § His physical development is enhanced by the relaxation of muscles, increased blood circulation and greater absorption of nutrients. § Digestive discomforts are soothed, congestion is eased and sleep is enhanced. § Immunity improves due to the reduction of stress hormones and increase circulation of lymph. § The parents benefit! Not only does their stress level decrease and sleep improve as the child is calmer and sleeps more regularly, but they also benefit from feelings of confidence, love and relaxation when the child wants to return the love by massaging mom or dad!
