Guest guest
I need to order an eggless birthday cake from a bakery. I've never done this before (I'm new to vegetarianism). Do all bakeries provide eggless cakes routinely, or should I ask to speak to the owner or chief baker? Would I need to provide the recipe? I do have the URL of a website (http://www.eggless.com/) that has a lot of eggless recipes. Any recommendations for veg-friendly bakeries in the south bay area (I live in Santa Clara)? Any tips on pitfalls to avoid? Any types of cakes that don't turn out well without eggs? Thanks. -- Mike
Guest guest
Hi Mike, I imagine most bakeries would be reluctant to use an outside recipe. However, you are in luck. There is a bakery in Santa Cruz called China Black Bakery that make a selecton of vegan (eggless) cakes. Their cakes are available in Whole Foods so you don't even have to travel to Santa Cruz. It tasted alright, but the consistency was bad and it wouldn't stay together. My guess is that recipes that call for 3 or more eggs probably won't work with the substitute, but that's for baking it yourself. I've also made a chocolate cake with applesauce and that turned out wonderful!!! If you find a good bakery that already does vegan cakes, they should know what works. Let us know how it works out! I'd love to know about nearby bakeries that will accommodate vegans! And thanks for that great eggless link! -Angela
Guest guest
I can second that about recipes that require a lot of eggs, especially egg whites. My boyfriend mentioned that when he was a kid, his favorite cake was angel food. So, for his first birthday that we were together, I decided to try making an angel food cake with egg replacer. I beat up that egg replacer into a hard peak, folded everything together, and it all looked great ... until it came out of the oven. The only description you could give it was 'Fallen Angel Cake'. However, as Angela pointed out, it tasted great as long as you didn't know what it was supposed to be. I also second the recommendation for Whole Foods vegan cakes. I ask for one of their chocolate ones for my birthdays. Yum! Even better with sorbet or soy ice cream! Guest guest
the name of the santa cruz bakery is "Black China Bakery" and they make great cakes! I especially recommend their vegan german chocolate cake. In santa cruz the cakes can be special ordered through New Leaf Market. and as Matthew says, whole earth carries them up in the peninsula. (they are also served at herbivore in san francisco.) Laurie
Guest guest
Mike-- You can order vegan cakes from the Vegetarian House restaurant in San Jose. (Not all of their cakes are vegan, IIRC, so be sure to ask first.) They have pictures you can look at first, and a website.-- Candace , " Sage, Mike " <mike.sage@l...> wrote: > I need to order an eggless birthday cake from a bakery.
