Request That Chipotle Make Pinto Beans Vegetarian 1. SB 233 - Withdrawn! Thanks to all of you who wrote letters and made calls regarding California Senate Bill 233 that would have made legal, the sale of kangaroo crocodile and alligator skins in the state of California. The bill was not heard on Earth Day and has instead been withdrawn by the author. The analysis provided by the Senate Natural Resources Committee reported that there were no letters in support of this bill and they had received many in opposition. Their conclusion was that there was no reason to change the current law! They cited many of our arguments on behalf of the kangaroos! We will find out today if thebill is dead this session, but even if it is there is noguarantee it may not beattempted again next session. We will keep you posted. A few newspapers covered the story: Sacramento News & Review: http://www.newsreview.com/issues/sacto/2003-04-17/bites.asp San Diego Paper http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20030423-9999_1n23kangaroo.html Daily Breeze.com http://www.dailybreeze.com/content/news/nmkangaroos22.html For more information on the campaign to save the kangaroos please see: http://www.vivausa.org/Campaigns/Kangaroo/adidas.htm www.savethekangaroo.com To order our leaflets against Adidas or our roo packet send a message to: roos. 2. Pig & Vegan Earth Day events! Thanks to all of you whoorganized events on behalf of thepigs around Easter! Based on the photos we have seen it seems many of you werevery creative andeveryone was able to reach a lot of people - even those buyingwere interested in at least hearing us out and that is so important! The vegan ice cream outreach events for Earth Day seem to havegone incredibly well. At Lincoln High Schoolactivists handed out120 samples andthe reaction wascompletely positive and inNew Mexico students and professors were lined up to get their hands on a cone! They were able to distribute a lot of literature and the feedback was amazing. The same thing happened when students activists did the event in Gainesville, FL. Activists in Tacoma went out to share the frozen delights with classmates. Photos can be seen at: http://kalistongue.com/pages/soyicecream/ Good luck to those whose events were delayed and we do still have some slots open for the July events! Thanks again to the following organizations or participating: Animal Activists of Alachua (Gainesville, FL); Animal Rights Club Lincoln HighSchool (San Jose); Alabama Animal Rights Fellowship (Tuscaloosa, AL); PAW (Boulder, CO); SeTA (Portland); Animal Outreach of Kansas (Lawrence, KS); Animal Protection of New Mexico (Albuquerque,NM); Fort Worth Vegetarian Society (Fort Worth, TX); In Solidarity with Animals (Houston, TX); United Animal Rights Coalition (Salt Lake City, UT); student activists at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Pugent Sound, and activists in Boston. Viva!USA is joining withCompassion Over Killing, Vegan Outreach, Mercy for Animals, SARA, Eco-Animal Allies, Freedom for Animals, UARC, and PETA to help make this happen. With more than 200 Chipotle locations in the United States, the fast- foodMexican chain is becoming a major player in the national restaurant scene. Specializing in burritos, Chipotle’s black beans are vegetarian. Unfortunately, the pinto beans are cooked with bacon. Few customers—if any at all—would stop buying Chipotle’s burritos if the pintobeans were vegetarian, yet taking out the lone animal ingredient in the beans would make the chain more attractive to millions of Americans who avoid pork for ethical, health, and religious reasons. Since Chipotle sells thousands, if not tens of thousands of burritos daily, removing the bacon from its pinto beans could do just as much--if not more- good as getting some number of individuals to stop eating bacon. And the best part is that it takes virtually no effort on our part, so we have very little investment with a potentially high payoff. Please politely let Chipotle know that vegetarians and others who avoid pork would love to have more options when they visit the hundreds of Chipotle locations across the country. Politely call or e-mail Chipotle and ask them to take the bacon out of the beans! jstupp 303-595-4000 To help Viva! continue to mail materials to activists and print more campaign materials please consider donating to us at: www.JustGive.org or Independent Givers of America at https://www.givedirect.org/give/givefrm.asp?Action=FE & FEDID=171 & CID=4703 For ordering materials: orders To sign up on our e-mail alert list: list For student e-mail list or materials: ACT ------- End of forwarded message ------- == http://pixxart.com the Art of Living in Health, Peace, & Light
