I'm in SE Michigan also. The tulips and daffodils are popped up, getting

ready to bloom. A couple of the flowering trees are budding out. I'm looking

forward to the crabapples, amelanchier, magnolias, and redbuds. AmyF

Hee. We started some parsley, thyme and stevia a few weeks ago. So we've got

some pretty small plants.

We just started (last week) some basil, oregano and a couple of lavendar

plants.

Outside of that, I'm still working on getting my garden bed all tilled and

everything before I can really plant. I'm trying to not go too crazy, as

we'll be away on vacation for about a week and a half (and I don't want to

lose any of my babies while we're gone!)

I otherwise have about 33 different seeds we're going to plant -

spinach (my son picked out and it's one of his favorites)

tomatoes (cherry and regular)

peppers (regular and baby yellow bell)

swiss chard

mixed salad greens

mixed lettuces

kaleidoscope carrots (purple, orange and yellow)

beans (some varieties that my grandpa had)

sunflowers

purple basil

watermelon

and a bunch of other stuff.

some edible flowers

dianthus (pinks)

nasturtium

we have roses

and now I've forgotton what some of the rest of them are...

This is one of my favorite times of the year. :) Good luck on your garden! I

can't wait to start mine. :)

Ooh, I wish I could have found some of those carrots! I just got the plain

orange ones. I bet the different colored ones are neat!! This is such fun, it

will be so nice to have all these things to eat later in the summer. :)

i'm not so sure that carrots transfer, but i guess you could try! we have a

pitiful apartment with pitiful light but i stole some empty space on one

side of the building and put in some tomatoes, peas, beans, radishes, and

spinach. i've planted more herbs than i will ever know what to do with, in

pots on our windowsill. i never knew spring until after i moved out of

arizona. now i love it! even though it means the summer is coming, which i

hate. :(

That's nice that you were able to get some garden space. :) We just have a few

little flower beds around the house, so I'm having to use lots of pots. I'm

using my little seedlings as payment for pots on a local . :) I

figure the more pots I have, the more tomatoes I can plant! I miss homegrown

tomatoes so much... these store bought ones taste like cardboard. You know those

tomatoes that burn your mouth because they've got so much acid in them? Oh yeah.

I once ate so many tomatoes my mouth was sore for two days. I believe I'll do

that a few times this summer. And I've never had homegrown spinach or swiss

chard, so that will be interesting. Both of those are going absolutely crazy, so

I'm going to be eating lots of those. :)

Silly story... my friend and I went to swap some plants for pots and we were

referring to it as " the pot deal, " and while we waited in the parking lot for

the person to show up, we were listening to Weird Al's White and Nerdy. How

appropriate. :)

It's like the Louden Wainwright song: there are two things that money can't

buy, and that's true love and home grown tomatoes.

Yay!! I'm excited too about the seeds I planted indoors. This is the

first time I've tried to grow food. Last year I was known as having a

black thumb, then we moved into our new barren house. In Oct I planted

some plants and cactus...They lived through the winter and are actually

blooming!! Luckily I have the space outdoor to plant sadly I live in

the dessert so I don't know what will grow and what won't. At least in

reality...in theory all the books/catalogs I've read think all this

will grow...maybe my thumb will go green. ;)

Excellent! Herbs usually grow in just about any condition. We have tons on

our window sills right now. My favorite is the stevia, but it's so very slow

growing right now (we had 80's on Monday and all week it'll be 50's and

rainy. Sigh. Not exactly good yard working weather. LOL.). I've heard it was

hard to grow from seed, but it was the only way it was available for here.

I'm worried it will die while we're on vacation (even though I have a friend

coming to take care of the house/animal care/etc while we're gone.

I'm so excited I've got about 1/3 of my garden space cleared out of

grass...it's starting to look like a garden, instead of we're just crazy and

have some edging around a square of grass. I'm sure things will pick up as

we get more weather where we can be outside more. :) I'm also super excited

about all the worms we've found digging up this spot (YAY good soil!). I

think we got lucky as the folks who had this place before us did very

minimalist care of all the landscaping (I think all they did was mow - as

everythign was in such a terrible state outside when we got here, I've

gotten so many complements about how nice it looks now - and I only did what

*I* thought was enough to make it not look awful).

We just put the cover on our gazebo, and we've at least had nice enough

weather we've had dinners out there already - I'm just itching so much to

just go dig in the dirt for hours and hours. I lose track of time when I'm

out there. :) It's so nice. :)

That's too funny, and true. :)

My husband never really had much of an opinion about tomatoes, until we

visited my grandparents (my grandpa had an entire lot that was his garden).

We had tomato sandwiches with them - and he just couldn't believe how good

they were (fresh out of the yard). :)

He's been a convert ever since.

Oh, I wanted to mention to you gardening types, in my looking I found some

nifty resources for gardening and wanted to share:

Gardens Alive (environmentally responsible gardening products)

http://www.gardensalive.com/

Seeds of Change ( organic seeds, seedlings, and other stuff

Planet Natural (earth friendly prodicts for home, yard and garden)

http://www.planetnatural.com

Buglogical (Natural pest control with natural bug preditors)

http://www.buglogical.com/

I have some more, but they're similar to the ones above.

Thought you all might be interested. :)

I'm going to buy some praying mantises. They send a sac of eggs and you put them

in a warm spot, and then they all hatch into teeeeeny little bugs!! My daughter

will flip out over that. She loves bugs. Plus the praying mantises will make

sure none of those other pesky bugs get after my vegetables!! :)

It's so exciting to watch your gardening efforts growing! My daughter

helped a bit with planting and watering, and is excited about eating the

veggies we planted.

Many of the things we planted didn't survive (some peas, some zuchini) but

we got plants my sister started and they're doing well. If only I can

remember to water everything :)

We have planted:

LOTS of strawberries

4 bell peppers

2 hot peppers

3 patches zuchini

2 patches acorn squash

3 different tomatoes

a row of carrots

2 rows radishes

a row of peas and beans

Hopefully most of that produces!

I picked up a flat of mixed baby lettuces at the farmers market. I was going to

plant it outside, but noticed a rabbit in the side yard. I'm going to keep my

edibles inside and see if I have better luck.

Kadee <abbey_road3012 wrote: I killed about seventy of my

bright side, that one has some blooms on it! I also managed to not

kill several bell pepper and banana pepper plants. I killed all my

outside and they went CRAZY. I'm going to have enough of those to feed

the entire country!! I went out and bought twelve more tomato plants

and they're all still alive after a week. Today my carrots sprouted.

And there's one little green berry on my blackberry plant. Overall I

think it's pretty good for a first try. :) My husband doesn't care a

bit about any of it since he doesn't like vegetables, but my daughter

is VERY excited. I told her when that blackberry was ready, that she

could be the one to pick it and eat it. Every day since I told her

that she's gone out there and looked at it to see if it was ready. :)

She also says she's going to eat spinach and swiss chard, though I'll

believe that when I see it! :)

As long as you're having fun! I think they take more pride and are more

willing to try different vegies when they see that they've grown this

amazing thing from a teeny little seed. :)

As for our garden:

We have a bunch of sprouts coming up (in the pots, none of the seeds I

planted show any signs of coming up. Sigh).

I have transplanted some of the small plants into the garden (basil,

oregano, parsley) and a friend of mine gave me half of one huge chive plant

(I divided it into 2, and my son wanted one in his garden bed) and she also

gave me half of a Greek oregano, which I also split into 2. (also in his

garden bed).

I'm excited about the tomatoes we have coming up - 3 different kinds, and

about 4 of each kind) and my baby yellow bells are sprouting, too, and one

of the tangerine dream ornamental peppers (they look like they're hot, but

they're sweet) :)

I also bought some small celery plants, so we'll see how they do, too. :)

It at least looks like something is going on out there and not just a

gigantic patch of dirt. :) Oh, I also decided to try planting strawberries

from some of the tops that I was going to put in the compost pile, so I

planted them instead. We'll see how that all goes. I'm not sure what they

will do, but I'm pretty sure that's how they self-seed and spread...

We'll see if anything happens out there. I can always start again, and buy

plants instead of seeds. We got a late start with the seeds this year as we

had nearly a 2 week vacation around when we *should* have started - or

earlier, but I didn't want to saddle our friends with watering the

seedlings/plants and everything on top of taking care of the house and the

rats...

My son picked out spinach (which he does like a lot) and I've still got

swiss chard (the neon lights variety) and several others that I STILL need

to get in the ground. I just need to get a billion tons of the jiffy seed

starter plug things this fall to start inside for next year instead. :) He

also has all the basil, and some parsley and thyme we transplanted in his

garden bed. It was easier for me to give him the old flower bed than to have

him help with mine - he can do whatever in his, oh, he also planted

sunflowers in his garden. :) It should be lovely once they actually sprout.

I'm trying to convince him to plant more tomatoes over in his, as he loves

them, but he's not said one way or the other. Hee.

Good luck, it sounds like she's having fun (and that's part of why I like

doing this, too, with my son). I have to check my garden, and see what's

going on out there today - as I've not been out there in what seems like too

long (only like just the other day, heh)

we have a very shady garden - any suggestions for fruits or veggies that prefer

shade and are relatively hardy? As hard as I try the only plants I have not

managed to kill are our geraniums.

Most herbs will do well in just about any kind of garden conditions. I've

grown them on windowsills before, too.

as far as others, I'm not sure - I'll have to check my list when i've more

of a minute to do so...

Send some of those strawberries over here!! I had one plant but sadly it bit the

dust.

Today Leah and I went outside to check on the plants, and we picked off a nice

big swiss chard leaf and ate it there in the yard. :) She normally won't touch

the stuff but she got to pick it and she really liked it! Jeffery even ate some.

It tasted soooooo good!! I love the swiss chard from the store, don't get me

wrong, but this fresh from the garden stuff tastes way better. :)

I kind of regret not getting any herbs... fresh parsley is wonderful though! I

had one plant in a pot on the windowsill and I kept picking leaves off and

eating them. :)

I'm sure your ratties will get some fresh vegetables, huh? Mine are going to

love having all those goodies to eat. :)

Good luck, it sounds like she's having fun (and that's part of why I like

doing this, too, with my son). I have to check my garden, and see what's

going on out there today - as I've not been out there in what seems like too

long (only like just the other day, heh)

We have all kinds of rabbits living around our house. We put chicken

wire around the vegetable garden and it seems to keep them out. Now if

they'd just stop eating all my tulips before they bloom, I'd be happy!

I planted some Patty Pan squash, they're so cute and I'm really hoping

they come up! I saw some at our grocery store but they were from another

continent so I left them on the shelf. Has anyone tasted them? I think

they're also called Sunshine Squash, they're small and yellow.

Uh oh, I bet that rabbit was eyeing your lettuce! We don't have rabbits here,

there are foxes though... probably why there aren't any rabbits!

Hee. Yeah, my boys will love them! They are particularly fond of carrots, so

I have to remember to plant them, too (they're kaleidoscope ones - purple,

orange, yellow and white I think). Shoudl be interesting once it gets going.

:)

My son loves the fresh parsley- and when it was inside, he ate leaves off of

it every day. :) Now, not so much since it's outside, but he is beyond

thrilled that his sunflowers are starting to poke out of the ground. Heh.

have been seen less than a mile from our house (lots of nature for a big city).

I just spent a whole day working the chicken wire out of the ground that covers

the lower half of our fence. We have sooo many raspberry bushes out there that

we can't possible pick them all. We need those bunnies to get in there and

start chomping!

Are the different colored carrots good? I saw some seeds for those but I didn't

get them because I wasn't sure about eating purple carrots! :)
