Guest guest
Debbie writes about lye in tooth soap and so forth. (all snipped) _____ I propose a different, more basic question: why use any paste or soap at all in your mouth? (Same question I asked about fabric softener recently. We are moving from details to more general principles, perhaps.) I remember saying " naughty " things as a child and having my mouth washed out with soap. Yuck!! Why would we do this intentionally? To my knowledge, all toothpastes, tooth soaps, etc. are toxic. But more important, they serve no useful function and may even impair the cleaning of teeth. All we are trying to do is gently remove physical material from the surfaces of our teeth and from being stuck between our teeth and gums. As with the blending/chewing discussion from yesterday, speeding things up is not a blessing. Gentle brushing in a small, circular motion, with the brush slightly angled into the gum line at the base of the teeth, and a little patience with the whole process, works just fine. As your system becomes cleaner and cleaner, there will be progressively less " gunk " to clean. Further, all soaps and pastes require extensive rinsing to come completely from the mouth. (The Boutenkos recently wrote about this, as I recall, in one of their newsletters. I believe they said tooth soap requires 4 thorough rinses, whereas paste requires a dozen.) And while all this is going on, some material is being absorbed in the mouth and/or by swallowing a bit. And then I remember those childhood experiences .... I am taking a moment to consider the overall trend of recent discussions here. We are reducing or eliminating body soap, shampoo, laundry soap, tooth soap, household cleaners.... As we share our ideas and experiences, aren't we doing just great!! ??
