Sand-n-Surf 4th of July VFP Fresh ocean breezes, clean sandy beach, and sharing vegan food with new and old friends -- join us at our annual 4th of July Independence Day Vegan Food Party (VFP) picnic & celebration at Montara State Beach. Vegan Food Party, aka very fun party, is a term coined by BAVeg co-founders and picnic hosts Tammy & Chris. If you've been looking for an opportunity to sample tasty new foods, share fellowship with new & old friends, showcase your favorite vegan recipe or try a new one, then this is the event for you! Everyone is welcome, veg or non-veg. All we ask is that you come with a vegan dish and an open mind. You're also welcome to 'animal test' new vegan recipes on hungry volunteers. If you're looking for ideas, see Chef Alex's column for some delicious BBQ recipes, perfect for a picnic! Please remember to bring your own reusable plate, utensils, and cup. EXTRA SPECIAL: We have a small gift for everyone who attends! So please RSVP so we have an accurate headcount. If you'd like to see a Vegan Food Party in your neighborhood, please contact Tammy to host. Veg Pride: BAVEG at SF LGBT Pride 2007 Like real estate moguls whose mantra is location, location, location, activists also heed those same important criteria. During the two day LGBT Pride 2007 celebration, BAVeg volunteers distributed over 10,000 pieces of literature, mostly by leafleting with "Why Vegan", "Even if You Like Meat", and Vegetarian Starter Kits. We also signed-up hundreds of new members. As one volunteer said, "I could never make this much of a difference in my entire life by just changing my diet." Who, why, and where - read all about it, with 100 photos, including vivacious volunteers (un)dressed for leafleting success. Planting the Seeds of Compassion We urge you to step outside your regular routine and just us in one of ours: being an advocate for animals. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has."-- Margaret Mead VEG OUTREACH With every bite we take, we make a difference in our own lives. And when we do outreach, and educate others about the cruelty and issues with eating animals or animal by-products, they, too, can start making a difference in every bite they take, and influencing their family and friends. Lots of opportunities for veg outreach during the summer -- music concerts, fairs, marathon runs. At the inaugural Stern Grove concert on 6/17, nearly 1,000 booklets were distributed and a fun concert enjoyed. All we need is YOU to make it happen. Please contact Tammy if you'd like to get involved. KFC CRUELTY PROTESTS Stand up for the chickens! 1st Saturday in San Jose and 3rd Saturday in SF. Held in Oakland at Pizza Plaza, the Bay Area's own vegetarian pizzeria, serving vegan pizza with cheeze and variety of vegetables and faux meats, and in San Francisco at Maggie Mudd's, beloved for its vegan ice cream (try the shakes -- they're awesome). Contact Sara and Dana respectively for more information (see event calendar). How to review a restaurant in the Ultimate Guide Heart Smart Cooking Cooking with Compassion and Good Healthby Chef Alex Bury Tis the season for BBQ. Do veg*ns love BBQ? We do. Do we settle for boring, bland, carrot and celery stick BBQ? We do not. When people eat dead animals at BBQ's, they're not tasting the animal flesh. They're tasting the BBQ sauce, the salt and fat and herbs and spices, the liquid smoke and beer. Put the same sauces on tofu, tempeh, seitan or big meaty mushrooms and you have the same summertime flavors and textures. Try these delicious vegan sauces (Pesto, BBQ Sauce, and Peach-Chipotle Sauce) at your next BBQ, and my all-time favorite comfort dessert: Chocolate peanut butter rice crispie treats.
