Happy New Year!

We've got a wonderful variety of events this month, from book discussions to cruelty protests to leafleting to dinner to cooking, and we encourage you to attend & support these events with your participation.

As always, we give thanks to our volunteers who make all of these events happen for our membership and the local community.

We do need your help with critical volunteer roles within Bay Area Vegetarians. These range from "behind the scenes" administrative type work to feet in the street advocacy to hosting a dinner or Vegan Food Party.

Please take a look at the volunteer page and let us know how you can help carry Bay Area Vegetarians into 2007. With your help, we look forward to making 2007 a veggie good year!

And, we hope you'll join us in a New Year's resolution this year -- if you're interested but haven't yet committed to being fully vegetarian, today's a great day to start! Living a vegan lifestyle is the kindest and earth-friendliest diet possible.

So make a pledge for 2007 -- eat vegan, be active in BAVeg, and be happy that you're making a difference every day for the animals, your health, and the well-being of the planet.

Vegan Food Party 2007

2007 is the Year of the Vegan Food Party (VFP)! BAVeg is famous for their Vegan Food Parties, showcasing some of the best food to be found in the Bay Area. VFPs are designed by their very food-filled nature to be fun, and it's a great opportunity to connect with new & old friends and try a variety of different foods. And, we encourage people to "animal test" new vegan recipes on hungry volunteers. Everyone is welcome, veg or not.

Thank you to Jina for hosting 2007's first Vegan Food Party on Jan 14th in Oakland (near Lake Merritt). We are also pleased to announce that Meghann is hosting a VFP on Jan 20 in Benicia -- the first VFP in BAV history in Solano County!

We get inquiries all the time asking when the next VFP in Walnut Creek or Milpitas or (name your city) will be. In truth, the answer depends on you! If you'd like to see a VFP in your neighborhood, have an opportunity to meet like-minded people in your area, then think about hosting. It's a fun and easy event. For more on VFPs and event hosting, please click here for details.

We hope to see a lot of new and old friends at our January VFPs. If you need ideas for recipes, please check out Chef Alex's monthly column -- see below for current recipes, read the archive for past columns, or ask for advice from Cat.

Whether you're in a quandary about the office holiday party and being the only vegan at work, or in a pickle about what to say when handing out a "Why Vegan" booklet, or simply want to know about buying or making vegan whipped cream (sans cruelty to cows) -- or anything else about vegetarianism or vegetarian living or simply a veg perspective -- then Ask Cat!

Cat is the voice of our panel of experts, waiting by their Inboxes for your questions. Send Cat your questions today! Every month we will answer several questions and we may even occasionally host a live chat session for new veg*ns. Please include at least your first name and city with your query.

We are collecting questions and formulating answers -- Ask Cat will formally debut next month!

Kimba Vegetarian Bistro, a Vietnamese restaurant, opened last month in San Jose in the original Good Karma location (but it's not associated with Good Karma).

Lots of movement in the Top Ten as the other worldly Saturn Cafe departs and in a stunning upset, the newly converted vegetarian pizzeria Pizza Plaza vaults to first place in the Top Ten.

Remember, it's always free for vegetarian-owned businesses to be listed in the Ultimate Guide. Recent additions include: Center for WorkLife Management (SF), Reiki With Cheryldickinson.com (Pacifica), and Affordable Animal Care (Oakland).

The Winter 2007 print edition of "Vegetarian Bay Area: The Ultimate Guide" is now available - you can order it online, or save shipping and pick up a copy at Little Otsu in SF.

With more than 1,000 reviews in the Ultimate Guide, these vegetarian restaurants are ranked the best. Agree or Disagree about the Top Ten? Then say something about it, with an Ultimate Guide review.

Cooking with Compassion and Good Healthby Chef Alex Bury

In the South, it's a tradition to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for good fortune. Some people believe you need to eat one bean for each day of the year, so you don't have any bad-luck days.

So for your good health, and for the animals too, enjoy this month's menu of black-eyed peas, collard greens, BBQ tempeh and cornbread.

On January 13th, Chef Alex Bury will be teaching a cooking class for new vegetarians and vegans. If you bring a new (non-veg) person with you, you can both attend for the price of one ($10)!
