Hi Anouk

I have an album by Liquid Tension Experiment (an offshoot of Dream Theater)

which states that the last track (at some 34 minutes long) is " for the

enjoyment of the people playing.... if you do not like self-indulgent

widdling, you should not listen to this track " . Personally, I enjoy it :-)

Very honest warning, more of that genre should follow suite.Personally, I think that sort of thing should have faded away in the mid 70`s............... i think that some people have short attention span..

recently a saw a pbs special where a music teacher turned

around rowdy hyperactive kids and by the end of the school year

they had the apreciation and patience to sit through

a symphony.

when I like a song, i can play it over and over and over again.

and again more. In fact, i am not allowed to play a certain sting

abulm in my house.. because otherwise

my husband will trow up.

so I only play it when he is away. (dream of the blue turtles)

This isn't the same as the mid seventies - that is just the last time you were aware of anything similar. The genre has moved on and evolved (it is progressive and therefore does not stay in the seventies), just as most other sub genres of metal have. I think the guitar solos etc that you talk about are not the same as the ones we talk about.

I think you are thinking about something different. The modern progressive

metal does not usually have one guitar playing unaccompanied. Admittedly

they have fairly long sessions of music with singing or shouting.
