Guest guest Report post Posted October 6, 2005 I garden. I gave up on vegetables about 30 years ago as we are surrounded by woods, lakes, fields and the rabbits and deer never left anything for us to harvest. I do still grow tomatoes and herbs. Mainly I grow flowers and shrubs. I used to ~help~ my uncle (who lived with my family) with the gardening from when I was 4. The tallest tree in my garden is one that he gave me. It was a self seeded cyprus (sp?) from his garden - it is now about 40 feet tall. He also gave Peter a hazel tree and Laura a blue rocket - both still growing strong in my garden. I do not use any nasties in the garden. We make our own compost from the veggie peelings and garden clippings and put that on the garden in the autumn and spring. I feed with nettle tea, for which I cultivate a patch of nettles - well that's one reason - there are some butterflies or moths that lay their eggs on them and at certain time of the year they are heaving with black caterpillars. Guest guest Report post Posted October 6, 2005 Family tradition (sang in my best hillybilly voice <g>). Gramma and Grampa taught all the grandkids about gardening. We are growing fruit trees (Golden Delicious, Fuji, Red Gravenstein and two mystery apples, Bartlett pears, Italian Prune, a couple of peaches), berries (raspberry and marionberry), roses (about 20), flowers, trees (redwood, stone pine, scotch pine, sitka, coast oak, Dawn redwood, Giant Sequoia), plus are putting in raised beds that will be in hoop houses for veggies. The weather up here isn't the greatest for a veggie garden nor is the soil. Ponderosa pine, Doug Fir and madrone don't make for friendly soil. Oh, plus we grow most of our own herbs.
