Hi Peter

Now, I know it's rare that I'll admit that anything good comes out of America.... all this talk of American food, and I can't help thinking that they are responsible for potatoes :-)

Speaking of potatoes, do you get all the old timey varieties (purple, blue, fingerlings, etc.) or just the basic white potato?

Sweet potatoes/yams were first cultivated by the Peruvians. Potatoes were first cultivated by the Incas.

They were both prevalant throughout the Americas by the time of first official "contact".

Now, we can do the how did they get there thingy with sweet potatoes too. They were found in Polynesia pre-columbus.

ok,

why is it so difficult to say that anything good

comes out of america?

to me this is hateful talk.

peterhurd made a comment about how we should be all more friendly

on this site. I completely agree.

but,how do you expect me to be friendly if people are america bashing?

I am american, and identify with this nationality.

I don't understand how you and peter hurd can say that nothing good

has come out of america. that is something haters would say, Please

tell me I am wrong about this.

I am not patriotic, nor do I agree with this administration, some

people have said that bush is/can be equivalent to hitler. I agree

with this, because I feel that he has

got a lot of blood in his hands and is terrible/devastation on the

environment.

However, you have got to differentiate between the administration and

the people that live here, that voted against him. The more I learn

the more I understand that as a nation we have got a lot of growing up

to do.

If you look back at my history on this veganchat site. I have never

made a derogatory comment regarding another nation. In fact, I am a

Europhiliac and consider it a magical place.

As much as I hate the EVILS of the china fur trade, their selling of

body parts of the endangered Tiger, etc.

I would never

make a comment saying " nothing good has ever come out of China "

I believe that is generalizing, an entire nation of diverse people.

I don't understand why you would say such a thing.

Hold on there bald eagle, The friendly banter ( and it is friendly banter ) started as a joke between me and Fraggle ( probably drunk in Denver ). There was no malicious intent, indeed it started with a tirade from the hirsuite one about British food.

I never once said nothing good has ever come out of the US of A, merely provoking a response ( which is something I like to do a lot to make sure you are all paying attention ), after you started to claim most of the 20th Centuries inventions were from America ( which sevral posts later were proved not to be exactly true).

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick on this one. And while I may slag off your current "leader", i certainly dont think for one minute that anyone in this chat group voted for him. We cant talk, look at the miserable excuse for an android that we ended up with.

So hey, are we cool now?

The joking was started by Fraggle taking the mickey out of British food - I

think it was even in the email title. This was teasing - a joke. All the

replies about America were also jokes and teasing. I think you have

misunderstood the situation.

Hi Anouk

I honestly think that Peter was just kidding. And Peter Hurd too. In

fact if Fraggle was here he would've joined in and slammed them back.

Honestly we all have our difficulties with the administration and

understand completely where you are coming from.

But I know that Peter would never had said such a thing to offend

you. He's actually, well, he's actually a good guy.

But PLEASE don't tell him I said that! PLEASE! Then he'll think that

I respect him and I could never live that down!

;)

But thanks for standing up for the US, it's nice to know there are

others out there that still believe in some things we have here. We

are far from perfect, and do some STUPID things, but we still have

some things to be proud of.

Hi Nikki/Anouk

My view is that loads of normal people in all countries in the world are

good people who we should all be proud of. I also think that most

governments, including the US and UK, stink. Our governments do not look

after us or care about us (New Orleans). We should care about normal

people in all countries rather than the governments.

Ok :)

The Pullman Sleeping Car was invented by cabinet-maker turned

building contractor turned industrialist George Pullman in 1857.

Pullman's railroad coach or sleeper was designed for overnight

passenger travel. Sleeping cars were being used on American

railroads since the 1830s, however, they were not that comfortable

and the Pullman Sleeper was very comfortable.

From IL - has a town named after him

Lots of Welsh ponies neglected around here, uncared and left without vet checks and regular food. RSPCA have been checking them ( thankfully ). Sad history they had down the pits, some never ever seeing daylight from the day they were led down the mines.

The Valley Vegan..............

A Village Lost As my sad gaze takes in the gutted community, the Coal Board had abandoned with such alacrity I remember the winding wheels of "Brown's" pit-head and the cage lowering colliers, now long dead to rip black nuggets from rich Welsh soil lungs and bodies, dusted with honest toil. Blue-scar-mapped bodies, still standing proud from coal face battles won underground. But although they fought with all their might they were quite helpless against the Tory blight. What chance had they to win the day? Since Thatcher rigged the law of the land so that she could steal the upper hand. As I cast my eyes forlornly on fields once grazed by the Welsh pit pony I see all that's left after Conservative's pillage is the hopeless plight of a work starved village.E.K. Hi Jo

Very well said, thank you. I feel the same way. There are many things

to be proud of everywhere and many things we don't " enjoy " . It's what

we do (or don't do) that makes the difference.
