Girls who eat chips more likely to get breast cancerBy Nigel Hawkes, Health Editor

EATING chips as a young child may increase the risk of contracting breast cancer as an adult, research in America has claimed.

Researchers at the Harvard Medical School say that for every portion of chips eaten per week in the pre-school years, the risk of breast cancer is increased. The data comes from a long-running study into the health of 80,000 nurses who have been followed for decades by a team from the research institute. The Nurses’ Health Study has already produced many links between diet and disease, some disproved by further and better research.

The latest paper, in the International Journal of Cancer, used data from 582 women with breast cancer and 1,569 women without the disease in 1993.

The researchers looked at the diets of the women when they were aged between 3 and 5, using information from their mothers, who were asked how often their daughters ate or drank various products.

The risk of getting breast cancer by the age of 60 is about one in 25. Karin Michels and colleagues estimated that eating chips just once a week before the age of 5 would raise that to about one in 20 — an increase in risk of 27 per cent.

The team said that while eating potatoes was not associated with increased risk, the preparation of French fries — frying in fat high in saturated fats and trans-fatty acids — may be of relevance.

Dr Michels said: “Researchers are finding more evidence that diet early in life could play a role in the development of diseases in women later in life. This study provides additional evidence that breast cancer may originate during the early phases of a woman’s life and that eating habits during that phase may be particularly important.”

She said that their data should be interpreted with caution because information on diet was dependent on the mother’s ability to recall her daughter’s diet.

“Mothers were asked to recall their daughter’s pre-school diet after the participants’ breast cancer status was known, and it is possible that mothers of women with breast cancer recalled their daughter’s diet differently than mothers of healthy women. Other foods perceived as less healthy, such as hot dogs or ice-cream, however, were not associated with breast cancer risk.”

Pamela Goldberg, the chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign UK, said: “Studies looking into how nutrition in early life might affect the risk of developing breast cancer are very interesting. In this case we need to take into account that the study relies solely on mothers recalling what their daughters ate 40 or 50 years ago.

“We would encourage women of all ages to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.”Jonnie

If this is a study of women in the U.S., it is sooooo full of holes that it is pathetic. For starters, buying chips was not as common place as it is now. Furthermore, lard and tallow were the norm for deep fat frying, not hydrogenated oils. I think they are looking for anything but dairy products to blame! Back in the 50s dairy products were frequently "preserved" with formaldahyde! Guess at whose suggestion! They are also looking for any excuse except for the big change that took place in the 50s, wholesale vaccinations, most of which had little or not testing done on them prior to their use! Plus, most testing was done on males and now they are finally realising, at least to some degrees, that women do not react to things the same as men! Sheesh, what a load of crap! I think you can eat chips as long as it's not all the time. It is interesting to note these items though so that if you do go down with cancer you can omit all these items to hopefully make a recorery - like LYnda's husband.

Potato chips are thin, circular fried potato used as a snack. usually

Jo,

A good reason our language is SOOOOOO mixed up is that we are a mix of many different peoples and languages from the settling of our country. With all the different nationalities and cooking styles it just blended into something new and different but kept a similance to the English of England. Linguistics is fun, though it is enough to give one a terrable headache.

There have been several news items over the last few months saying that research needs to be done on how women react to certain medicines and treatments because it seems we are different. I know that vitamin c for colds works better for men than it does for women, and women have very different symptoms of heart attack.

I've heard that it's very difficult because of our hormones. I guess they couldn't handle all the changes and what it did to the data. Jo Cwazy <heartwork wrote:

oh...don't joke..

it was actually proposed back when this bruhaha was roiling

same with french toast...

its sorta amazing that the congresscritter Jones from north carolina who had em

change the name of the spud dish in the capitol hill cafeterias (he had em wipe

the term french from all 3 cafeteria menus)(good use of tax dollars!) is now one

of Bush's harshest critics on the iraq war.....

Wow, haven't thought of that for years. All you see in restaurants anymore

is ranch, thousand, blu cheese and Italian/oil & vinegar. Maybe that nasty

old orange stuff is gone <g>

No, I'm afraid not. It's a cult thing here - some people love it, some people hate it. Wen it was new, when I was a teenager, I hated it - much too crude for me at that time. I like some of the sketches now, and the Life of Brian is very funny, but obviously I don't know all the lines, like some of you seem to.

I realise that now, but there should be some mention of a quote really, so as not to offend anyone who doesn't know.

U know, I don't get that. Everyone I know (and I know a lot of people) supposedly voted for Kerry. I was sure he was gonna get it, what a dang surprise when it wasn't so. How did THAT happen, I wonder? Yes, we were sadly a red state.Lynda <lurine wrote:

Yeah and they can't ever get it straight and change things as soon as we get used to it. Ten years ago the red states were called blue states and the blue states were called red states. Go figure!
