Our sidewalks were called pavements because they were walkways paved

with paving slabs, which our roads have never been. We did (and do)

of course have cobbled streets.

LOL. It's always tempting - on one hand we know it is more dangerous

for bikers than it used to be - on the other, it is fun, although in

the winter it is really really cold.

I suppose it is a good law in one way - mgiht stop people jumping out in

As a mainly pedestrian, the thing that *really* bugs me about cyclists is that they seem to think that red lights don't apply to them, and they can just sail through all the pedestrians trying to cross the road at pedestrian crossings. I will admit that when they do this to me, I do tend to be rather inconsiderate of them, as I prefer to stay upright, and not flattened by a mad cyclist!

I've very rarely (if ever) seen taxis / buses / lorries shoot through red lights and mow down cyclists who are observing a green light. I've seen cyclists do this many times to pedestrians. On one occasion I was actually hit by a cyclist who did just this, and then claimed that they were in the right, even though I was crossing on a green light!!!

Around here the cyclists seem to think that everyone is supposed to operate around them. They zip between cars, in and out of traffic, split lanes, up and down driveways onto the sidewalk and back onto the street, hollering at folks right, left and inbetween.

 

There was one particulary obnoxious guy where we used to live and the kidlets got tired of him (he cuss at you in your window as he'd fly by) and as he came cussing and trying to pass us they opened the door. Blam. Bad, I know, but you can just take so much from obnoxious people! He screamed for the cops and the cops wrote him a ticket for passing on the right <g> They'd had it with him too but hadn't been able to catch him before.

I agree, I was just being a pedantic old Celt. I think that taxi drivers are in my opinion the absolute worst drivers on the roads, and have their own set of rules, and follow an alternative highway code.
