Guest guest
A DIY enthusiast from Staffordshire has offered thanks to the surgeons who saved his life after he shot himself in the heart with a nail gun. Nigel Kirk, 53, was working on flooring in his Burton-on-Trent home when the accident happened. Doctors at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital said the two-inch nail was embedded in his heart like a nail in a car tyre. They said they could not just pull it out as it would have killed him. Mr Kirk was working in his bathroom when the incident took place. Pain in chest "I was moving from one position to another when I tripped on a towel and I heard the gun go off," he said. He then felt a pain in his chest. Mr Kirk went on: "I thought there is something wrong here and I had a pretty good idea where the nail had gone. "I could feel the nail embedded in me. There wasn't any blood." A surgeon at the hospital said: "It was like a nail in a car tyre. "When you take a nail from the tyre, the air will rush out. It would have been the same with his blood." Guest guest
Work in radiology at a hospital for any length of time and you will see absolutely everything. It is like working in the Twilight Zone. I always said I should write a book or a screen play except no one would believe it! Lots of "accidents" are just pure dumb and lots of cases are just too horrid to think about, particularly the child abuse cases. If you think what you read in the news is bad, well the really bad ones don't make the news because no one would believe them! I'm not entirely sure how true the story is - at the time there were some supposed x-ray images going around the net, and if you looked at where the nail went on them, it clearly passed straight through his left eye - he certainly would have noticed it by the fact he'd have been blind! Guest guest
Son #3 came within a couple of hours of loosing his leg. He was walking around the back of a car and the license plate had a bent up corner. It cut his leg. Being a typical male, he ignored it. I mean, not manly to complain about a little cut from a stupid license plate. Ripping infection that went clear into the bone and was a matter of hours before reaching the marrow! Guest guest
Speaking of dangerous things in retrospect, spicy peppers. I chopped up a bunch yesterday early afternoon for some beans. Later on (after washing my hands many, many times) I went to the ladies room. My son came running to find out why I was howling, crying and carrying on in there! I haven't had the beans yet, I'm almost afraid to. My hands are STILL burning! Guest guest
Hi Fraggle > there are numerous cases of someone gettin an object thru his skull and living.... > if it went up the nasal passage, it could look on x-ray like it went thru his eye, but its in between... The particular one I saw had two x-rays, one from the front, and one from the side - on their own, you could have argued that it missed the eye, but the one from the front clearly showed it going through the left hand half of the face, where the eye was, and the side one showed it poking through the space where the eye socket is... On a slight aside, I have heard stories of my sister sticking a knitting needle up her nose when she was young. I don't personally remember it, but I'm sure Jo could elaborate! Guest guest
Avon puts out a product called "Silicone Glove" or something like that. Whenever I am doing anything that will leave nasties on the hands, I use that first. Learned about it back in high school when all the kids made summer spending money by working in the cannery where applesauce for baby food was made. You have no idea how bad something can smell until you've worked in an apple cannery! The supervisor told everyone one about the Avon. Those of us who bought the Avon could live with our hands. Those who didn't had stinky hands for months after the jobs were done! I still use it when I am making a big batch of spaghetti sauce (lots of garlic and onions to chop) or making a big batch of salsa (lots of peppers to chop). Lynda Lynda - Jonnie Hellens Monday, August 08, 2005 3:52 PM Re: Re: Nail Gun accident Speaking of dangerous things in retrospect, spicy peppers. Guest guest
yup, spent 10 days in the hospital having packing put in and taken out twice a day and then 2 more weeks going into the office once a day to have it done. Nasty and painful! He said that next time he would listen to mummy. I said, there better not be a next time! This child has given me every gray hair I have and I have way too many! He started off by being a blue baby and stopped breathing on a regular basis for the first 6 months. At about two we came home from the grocery store to find that he snuck out of the house when the sitter wasn't looking and climbed up on the 6 foot fence and was walking the top 2 x 4. At 2.25 I got a frantic call from the sitter. He had managed to crawl up to the top shelf in her clothes closet and get into a locked box and eat her medications. At 2.5 he " borrowed " another little boy's 2 wheeled bicycle and took off riding it on one of the most traffic clogged streets in town (hey, Fraggle, that would be Santa Rosa, so you know what I mean about traffic). At 4.5 he went down a slide and sliced the instep of his foot on a broken beer bottle. 17 stitches. At 6 he was pushed into a metal pole and broke his front teeth out. At 7 he was playing Little League and had his hip joint bruised. Hmmmm, was 8 an o.k. year? At 9 he was speared in the back while playing Pop Warner. At 10 he went camping and another kid almost sliced off his little finger (more stitches). Oops, I was wrong. At 8 it was a concusion playing hockey at the local ice rink. Let's see, broke his little finger, groin pulls, hamstring problems, blew out both knees playing basketball, . . . . Would ya like to hear about Sons #1 and 2 %-} Ah, the joys of raising boys <<bg>> Lynda - Peter <metalscarab Monday, August 08, 2005 5:24 PM Re: Re: Nail Gun accident > Hi Jo > > > That was very quick, and terrible to lose his leg. Guest guest
That would be son #1 who set up a ramp on a bale of hay when he was two. Little red tricycle going hell bent for election and flying off the other side where he planted the handle bar in his teeth. I stuck the suckers back in and made him bite down on a few folds of cotton for awhile. They did just fine until it is time for the new teeth to come in. Of course, he wasn't satisfied with that. Nooooo, he had to play trampoline with his captain's bed. Over backwards, sliced his head wide open and blood spurting all over the place. His sister (2 years older) came CALMLY out into the livingroom and said " Alex has a little bump. You need to come make it better. " No car, until gazillion miles out in the boonies and on a private road no one could ever find! Dog clippers and butterfly bandages had to do the trick. he still has a lovely scar.
