I understand the thing about mayonnaise...was a Kraft fanatic for decades

(well, it's true!).....but now I'm a Vegenaise convert. It is wonderful -

look for the grape seed oil vegenaise at your health food store. Be sure

to look in the refrigerated section.

Is there a reason you are having frozen meals when you're at home all

day? Just wondering if that's really your preference....it doesn't take

much time to steam some fresh veggies and cook a cup or so of rice or warm

up some beans. Salads are even easier than that - I go through a huge

container of an organic lettuce mix from Sam's every 4 days or so. I keep

thinking one of these days I'll wake up and the whites of my eyes will be

green!!!

welcome to the group Sylvia,

you will get some great ideas from some nice folks here.

I would like to recommend veganaise to you. I tried it because everyone raved

about it, and now I use it all the time because it is just so darned good! It

taste's better than mayo if you can believe that, it is just so good and half

the fat of mayo, and no cholesterol!

Newbie here

Hello Everyone,

My name is Sylvia and after 8 years of slowly straying away from

being a Lacto-Ovo I have decided to get back into this healthy

lifestyle and have gone strictly vegetarian now. I have had two

family members die of cancer and I realized that I needed to take my

life and my health back into my own hands.

I am also on a low-fat diet because I am obese. I supplement my

daily fat intake with Hemp Seed Oil.

One of the things I miss most is my mayonnaise. Anyone have a good

recipe to share? I am home alone all day and prefer to use flash

frozen foods that are quick and aimpe and tend to be drawn to Amy's

Foods. I bought and tried their California Veggie Burgers this week

and really enjoyed it. But when it came time to spread on the mayo

for some moisture I thought, " Hummm...that's a no-no now so what in

the world can I use? " Then I thought of hummus and it was great.

Threw on a little onion and had a nice " hamburger. " Here is a recipe

I found on the net for a really good hummus:

2 C Chickpeas

1/4 C lemon juice

3-4 large cloves roasted garlic

1/2 t ground cumin

1/2 t coriander

1/2 t black pepper

1/4 t cayenne pepper

salt to taste

enough veggie broth to make right consistency

Process all in food proccesor and puree till smooth

I am also looking for a tried and true really good homemade veggie

stock. I sort of know how to begin but need a little reminder.

For the time being I am using " Better that Bouillon Vegetable

Base. " It is really good but rather expensive. Do any of you have a

recipe for a vegetable base?

Nice to meet you all,

Sylvia

You can get organic lettuce mix at Sam's? Last time I

looked I couldn't find anything. It may be a regional

thing or maybe they are just getting " on board " so to

speak. Will try tomorrow. I'll be over that way.

Thanks.

They have all kinds of organic produce( a lot of it is the Paul Newman brand of

produce) and canned products. Some organic cereals, juices and coffee too.

Funny all our tastes are different. Last time at my whole foods they were all

out of theoriginal flavor, so got the grapeseed oil. I don't like that asmuch as

the original, but it is still good. there is another flavor of veganaise also, I

haven't tried it yet, forget what it is.

well Chanda I was glad for your recommendation about the grapeseed one, because

I too am a salt aholic and if this was to salty for you, I'm sure it would of

been for me too. I instead got the one that was the orginal flavor. I might

get a small jar of it sometime though, just in case the batch your jar came from

accidently had to much salt in it. Grape seed oil is so good for you, I hope

it was a one time accident. Did you call the company and let them know.

Sometimes they can track it down and for quality control purposes and find out

what happened.

Hi Marcia, welcome to the garden! I also had a gastric bypass and found

(-painfully) that meat, chicken, fish, etc were rental food so I continued with

my lacto-ovo vegetarian way.

Getting the husband person to eat other than green beans and corn. Hmm...what

does he like, generally? Mexican, Oriental, Euro, USA standard cooking? I know

the group files have a wealth of recipes you could try that he'd actually like.

On the tofu subject. It took several recipes from the group to get me to

actually eat it but my husband person Does Not Like It. Period.

Protein and gastric bypass patients. IMO and I can back it up with many sources

but am too lazy right now, if you cannot get adequate protein in by your diet,

you need to supplement with protein shakes. There are soy based ones (which my

stomach turns into enough gas to run half the cars in the world) and whey based

ones. E-mail me offline if you want more info. Right now my protein levels

(and iron levels, and hemaglobin) are in the toilet because I've been ill. You

Do NOT want to let your body get to the point where you are protein deficient,

need iron infusions and blood transfusions. Trust me. Please.

Okies, nagging over. Welcome to the group! Jeanne in GA

Hi Irene,

Welcome! I agree--This is a wonderfully friendly group :)

My family calls me Reenie. Do we pronounce it the same way--long E,

rhymes with beanie?

Cassie,

Where are you in Florida? I'm in Florida as well, in the Daytona Beach

area. I would LOVE a playgroup with others that share my beliefs. I

actually started a local vegetarian group recently to do so

(www.daytonaveg.com). But not many people have joined. :-(

Hi,

My mom lives in Florida, and we visit her sometimes (at least once a year)

and we'd love to have some folks we could meet up with, too when we're there

if we had time. :) She's in Palm Harbor - across the Bay from Tampa if that

helps.

Starting a group sounds good. Have you tried looking to see if there was

something already going (meetup.com and are some other places to

check, too).

We are located in Lakeland which is in the middle of Orlando and Tampa. I can

get to either place on I-4 in about thirty minutes. I believe we are about two

hours from Daytona. I have met very few people here that are vegetarians and

none with children. It is so sad!

Cassie,

We are in the same boat over here in the Daytona area. I've been here

for a year now and have found a couple of adult vegetarians, no kids. I

wish badly that I could find some.

However, you are sitting on a potential gold mine that you don't

realize! There is a Central Florida Vegetarian Group in Orlando! You

should join that. They hold meetings and events and you are close enough

to attend, it's too far for me. Although I did go to the Vegetarian

Festival in October. But you would certainly meet some other vegetarians

there. Check it out here: http://www.vegcf.org

They also have a meetup.com group. This may be your answer to finding

others! Believe me, if I lived only 30 minutes from Orlando I'd be at

the meetings mingling with other vegetarians.

There is also a Tampa Bay vegetarian group! You can find that here:

http://www.tampabayvegetarians.org

Join one or both... you will meet other vegetarians!

Portland is a great city to live in! The only thing that stinks is the rain in

the winter. It really gets to me! I could use a little sunshine right now.

But once spring and summer hit, I am in love all over again with this place!
