folks become vegan for different reasons, a combination of reasons, etc and so forth

some for animal rights, some for health, some for environmental reasons, some hate the taste of meat...some are vocal, some just few it as very personal

Hi I would simply like to introduce myself to the group, I have been vegan for over 2 years now and so far have not met another. I am very passionate about what I believe, and try to live an 'ethical' life as much as is possible due to certain restraints. Being vegan to me is part of my entire life philosophy, which centres around improving the world and every living thing held upon it, I want to be positive energy that makes other things I interact with feel better about themsleves. I am also a firm believer in living by example, I beleive that showing somebody how I live(trying to elimminate prejudice and malice), will acheive more than telling somebody how to act, I am also an optimist in the sense that where many consider the world, and indeed society to be on a downward spiral, heading for doom, well I have faith that this world can improve and will, but it involves every individual no matter how insignificant they may seem to keep a hold of there principles and morality. Is the vegan community generally on a similar wave length? or does being vegan mean something unique to each and every person? either way lifes a vast and exciting journey, so hi to the group, I hope to become an active member who can hopefully contribute something to your group, Nath

Hi

I live in south east England - Surrey. I believe, from my travels,

that you are in one of the worst areas here for vegan food when

eating out!

Welcome to the group Nath!

That's very true, I think everyone becomes vegan for many different

reasons. A 'semi-vegetarian' I know doesn't eat particular meats just

because she doesn't like the texture...

And I agree with your philosephy, it sounds very environmentalist in a

way. Even though you have been a vegan for two years, I don't think

it's that uncommon not to have met another vegan since vegans are such

a minority. I've been a vegan for over one and a half years and I

haven't met another vegan either.

Hey my name is amanda, i am a 21year old student about to start my

fourth year of a fine arts degree in Auckland New Zealand. I am amazed

that some people on here have never met another vegan, I think there

are an unusually high proportion of vegetarians and vegans at art

school though, possibly helped by the fact we have an amazing vegan

cafe run by haere krishna harvey he is awesome!

I have only been vegetarian for 6months and vegan for two of those. I

was bought up on a sheep and beef farm in the country, my father is a

keen hunter and fisherman but is very accepting of me and respects my

descision to abstain from meat YAY!

Hey Amanda!

That's really cool that you have so many vegetarians and vegans in

arts school and you have a good place to eat. Unfortunately, I must

be in a very bad spot for vegans because I haven't even seen an

especially vegetarian restaurant =[

I think you'll find it easier going from vegetarian to vegan, I spent

a whole 6 months before taking the next step!

yeah thats amazing amanda, lucky you. I ahve to settle for a rotten

fruit salad at northumbria uni, it really is terrible. Thats cool that

you have grown up on an animal farm and made a decision to go vegan,

what was your testimony as a figure of speach? and i'd like to say

thank you to all of the group for your warm welcome, it's so reasuring

to know you guys all exist. Its interesting that there are a higher

level of vegans on an art degree, I sometimes think that a creative,

sensitive soul is more inclinded to spot the attrocities to animals

first, thanks to there insight into human emotion, and i geuss there

honesty. I myself personally am an extremely sensitive guy, who is very

creative, and full of passion, and this nature of mine leads to my

stand against things I see as ethical wrong doings, the negative side

is it also leads to depression, being so sensitive, but I would rather

be an extremely sensitive, and thus caring, and have a respectful

appreciaition for the natural world, than a level headed, passive

being, who not only can add to world problems, but also do little to

help, other than helping the economy, sorry for sounding a little

preachey, I just got back from climbing and the adrenaline is still

running, wish you all a great week guys, Nath

Hi Nath My name is Adam I'm from California but what ever part of the world I'm in, finding a good vegan meal or even a personwho understands what a vegan is very difficult. I find that the people might make going out to eat easier are the managers of the restaurantor if you can find a waiter who happens to be at least a vegetarian they might make a suggestion. Probably your best bet is research a restaurant online find there 800 # and askthem what your choices are let them know how much you frequent the restaurant.Good LuckAdam"aholeinmyheart" <aholeinmyheart Sent: Wednesday, January 7, 2009 2:39:13 PM Re: introduction

Hello. I'm in a similar boat, also 37 and my son is 5.5yrs old and has

a milk protein allergy, too - so we ended up 'here' (vegan) for much

the same reason as you (oh, our son still has reactions to milk when

we get something that snuck in - from us not making it or not asking

about that one bagel that one time we thought we'd be ok if we didn't

ask...ugh).

We also started out like you, except I never liked eggs, but kind of

tolerated them. Starting into my second year egg free (well, this past

Nov. it was a full year!). My son and spouse like eggs, but rarely eat

them at home, because I 'forget' to pick them up (ha ha) - because

I'm happy to not have them in our diet and I do almost all the grocery

shopping. Heh.

We stopped having milk at all in the house as we just felt it wasn't

fair to him if we had stuff he couldn't have (and I didn't even want

to plant a seed next to anything remotely resembling short order

cook...) and so we chose to just stop with the dairy all together

since he was about 2 (we tried to re-introduce it every so often, as

suggested by our Dr...but we just didn't like doing that, for how it

made him feeland now - a year or so ago we had an allergist tell us to

try giving him some and to log his reactions, etc and I just refused

and never went back to them because that's not why I was there...we

were happy w/no dairy and it's not like his reactions are only just

physical, they also severely impact his mood/attitude on top of him

being physically ill - I just needed/wanted verification/etc for

school when he was going to start last fall. There is no way I would

purposefully do that to him - since he has such an issue if it's a

trace ammt - like we can't use SILK soymilk anymore because they do

process on the same equipment - and I think their soy LIVE yogurt is

all cultured on milk - maybe it was another brand, we tried, but I

somehow missed that part - but I grow more wary of things processed

on equipment shared with milk for how that stuff all makes him act

depending on how much cross contamination happens -some stuff has been

ok though, but it seems hit or miss much of the time).

Sorry for the ramble, but I totally can understand where you're coming

from on the milk allergy side of things. :) I guess in short, now that

I've rambled on, we went vegan because it was so much easier with the

allergy than being vegetarian (since nearly every vegetarian dish I've

seen has cheese or milk in it somewhere, but it's not the case with

vegan stuff).

We also don't tend to go out to eat in places, because most folks

figure that vegetarian dishes must include cheese of some kind. We are

lucky to be in a place where there are vegan options at some places

(usually Asian restaurants tend to be ok in our experience, though we

do have a few lovely vegan restaurants in the city that we have gone

to, and a few we've never made it to!).

Welcome!

Missie

Does this mean that your parents made the choice for you or that you

made that decision as a child and that your parents were supportive?

HI-

I grew up, went to elementary school, junior high school, high

school, and college in Corona del Mar, California, which was just a little

village in Newport Beach at the time (I’m 57 years old on January 28). The

city of Irvine had not even been incorporated yet. Welcome to our house. J

HI-

I grew up, went to elementary school, junior high school, high school, and college in Corona del Mar, California, which was just a little village in Newport Beach at the time (I’m 57 years old on January 28). The city of Irvine had not even been incorporated yet. Welcome to our house. J
