Guest guest
New to the list sorry if this topic has been addressed! Anyone have any good book/movie recommendations for preschool aged vegetarians? My 3 year old is starting to push back a little about why some things aren't vegetarian " but mommy what IS it? " I guess I am kind of dreading this talk the way some folks avoid the birds and the bees talk, so any recommendations for me as well? I have read many nutrition type books but nothing on explaining vegetarianism to a really young child (ie no factory farming pics yet!!!) She doesn't believe us that people eat animals either, we were joking at the dinner table one day about eating things like shoes, books, windows, etc and she saw a decoration in the living room and said " I'm gonna eat a chicken. " Well we explained to her that some people do eat chickens but we don't because we are vegetarians. She thought we were teasing her and refused to believe it! I think that's why I am a little hesitant to destroy that innocence! Would love to hear your stories, thank you!
Guest guest
One of our group membes has created a great blog that reviews books and movies for veg kids/families. You can find it here: http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/ We also do the same types of things as you. We will ask the kids if they would eat a shoe, a horse, a frog, etc. It's fun and games, but we have also explained that some people do eat animals. The hardest thing for my daughter to take was that grandma eats animals. When my daughter confronted grandma about it she also made grandma look at her food. Now grandma eats vegetarian food probably five days out of seven! And dropped 40 pounds in the process. We try to take them to see animals as much as possible, so they can make the connection. We have taken them to a sanctuary, to see the cows and chickens near our home, and even to visit with the frogs in our yard. We do anything we can to get them to make the connection with animals. We also show them meat in the grocery store and explain what it is, which really grosses them out! Jacqueline www.vegblogger.com
Guest guest
Hi, This is my favorite topic -- so much so that I started a blog [vegbooks.wordpress.com, soon to move to vegbooks.org] reviewing kids books and movies from a vegetarian perspective. One of the members of this group also is a guest blogger on the site from time to time. Here are a few of my picks for preschool books with links to full reviews: All in a Day - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/all-in-a-day/Diary of a Worm - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2010/01/04/diary-of-a-worm-guest-post-by-jacquelin\ e-bodnar/Do Animals Have Feelings Too? - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/do-animals-have-feelings-too-2/Dog Heaven - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/dog-heaven/Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/fancy-nancy-and-the-posh-puppy/Horton Hears a Who - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/04/horton-hears-a-who-the-book/My Mom Eats Tofu - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/my-mom-eats-tofu-guest-post-by-carolyn-\ m-mullin/That's Why We Don't Eat Animals - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/12/03/that%E2%80%99s-why-we-don%E2%80%99t-eat\ -animals-guest-post-by-carolyn-m-mullin/The Cinder-Eyed Cats - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/the-cinder-eyed-cats/The Lady and the Spider - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/the-lady-and-the-spider-guest-review-by\ -sharon-young/The Lion and the Mouse - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/12/16/the-lion-the-mouse/ 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/11/07/twas-the-night-before-thanksgiving/Who Is the Beast? - http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/2009/10/27/who-is-the-beast/ OK - that's more than a few - and I didn't even get going on movies! You'll note that these books are not all explicitly vegetarian and one or two may even depict eggs or dairy, but they all have good messages about healthy choices or the way we treat animals and the environment. The reviews explain what values they promote and what discussions they may spark. I am very interested to hear what others in the group have to say! Also, if anyone is interested in writing guest reviews for the blog, check out the guidelines at http://vegbooks.wordpress.com/guest-bloggers/writers-want-your-name-here/. Guest guest
We like " Herb the Vegetarian Dragon " . Also, my son brought home a book called " Little Pea " by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Very cute! Our kids have been vegan since birth (going on 15 years now). We refer to flesh foods as to what it really is - -beef is cow, pork is pig, etc. We call them " cow burgers " . Our kids understand it fine. Bring them on farm visits whenever possible so they can see the living conditions of the animals. Our reasons for becoming vegan were allergy/health related. But we saw Jay Gordon, MD speak at a Le Leche League conference. He said children relate much better to the animals feelings and are naturally empathetic. So that is how we taught it to them - -the health, planet benefits are an added bonus. His book is " Good Food Today, Great Kids Tomorrow " . , " mommydittle " <jlhufnagle wrote: > > New to the list sorry if this topic has been addressed! > > Anyone have any good book/movie recommendations for preschool aged vegetarians? > >
