Guest guest Report post Posted January 6, 2002 Hi Jo (hope you had a good holiday, even if you don't celebrate Christmas, being Pagan and all) I have heard rumours (via Tony Humphries, vegan AR prisoner of conscience) that such a thing exists in Holland. I do hope he didn't mean Veggie Kaas, which I personally think horrible. I can't remember his exact words, but he said something to the effect that it was so authentic that you really would not be able to tell the difference, so I really do live in hope! I still think that I really miss a cheese and pickle sandwich and toasted cheese on top of my spag bol. Now that I know what calzone is (thanks Jane) I really fancy one of those, too! All good wishes Cathy > ---------- > Jo[sMTP:Heartwork] > Reply > > Do you think they ever will? > > Jo > >
Guest guest Report post Posted January 6, 2002 Cathy Thanks - it was lovely. We greeted the sunrise on 22 December, and it was beautiful. Very cold, but beautiful. Did you enjoy your celebrations? I too have tried the Veggie Kaas - well nearly tried it. I toasted some, but it looked like something from Baldrick's kitchen, and we couldn't bring ourselves to eat it. I don't particularly miss cheese, but my husband does. So far we haven't found a vegan version that he likes. Guest guest Report post Posted January 6, 2002 Maybe it might be an idea for a list to be put together of the "cheeses" that people have tried and what they thought of them. So far the few times that I have tried them they have looked and tasted like putty. But cheese is the one thing that Veggie tell me that they would miss if they went Vegan so it would be good to be able to recommend something. Roy Jo <Heartwork wrote: CathyThanks - it was lovely. Guest guest Report post Posted January 6, 2002 We had a conversation going about cheese a while back but everyone differed in their likes; I like Scheese but not Cheezly while others were the opposite. All boils down to personal taste - as does soya milk. Think the only thing to do is try these alternatives about 6 months after the animal product so you've almost forgotten the taste. Well, it worked for me with soya milk but it might just have been I found one I liked (Provamel sweetened). Now I like quite a few, tho I've been vegan for 10 years and in that time you can get used to almost anything! Guest guest Report post Posted January 8, 2002 On the American Natural Snacks (the manufacturers) site it does not mention casein but does claim that Veggie Kaas is vegan (the much larger Soya Kaas range does not have such a claim). They also say on their nutritional information that the " FDA says that a product containing caseinate can be termed non dairy. However Soya Kaas does not make that claim. " so I'm inclined to belive them when they say Veggie Kaas is 100% dairy free. I just ordered from them for the first time on Monday morning and the food arrived Tuesday (delivered after work which was good)! Fast service! I assumed it was since Redwoods do the vegan cheese but just want to make sure. I eat Scheese (www.scheese.co.uk). I don't like Redwood's regular Cheezly (as I've said before). I'd like to try the melting stuff though as I miss cheese on toast. I usually have grilled cheese sandwich using Chreese mix. I want the Tofutti cheese pizza to be on sale in England. Guest guest Report post Posted March 31, 2005 I like VeganRella cheddar flavor for eating with crackers and mustard or making a grilled cheese sandwich. My toddler actually enjoys tofutti slices american flavor... I think they are horrible. But, the tofutti mozzarella slices do work well for pizza (although we usually just make pizza without any cheese.) My favorite cheese sub is a spread I make, I put it together by trial and error and combining several other recipes: cashew cheese spread in a blender, combine 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 a red bell pepper (or the whole thing if it's small), 1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 or 2 TB chopped onion, and 1/4 tsp garlic granules. Whir this together, then with the blender running add a few raw cashews at a time through the top hole until you have added almost 2 cups and the mixture is getting thick. It will be a little on the runny side but after going in the fridge for a bit will be very thick and spreadable. Great on sandwiches or rice cakes or crackers or as dip for pretzels or apples or veggies. DO NOT try this with a wimpy blender!!! I have burned out the motors on several blenders. Now I have a super heavy duty waring and it can just handle this. I may have to get a vitamix one day...
