yeah, i totally agree with nikki there. i don't know why, but some people were given the impression that veganism is some elitist group and that the only way to be one of us is to learn to levitate above ground so that you never step on any bugs.. i guess the militant vegans stereotype. but everyone makes mistakes / no one is perfect. i think the least harm principle applies here. just do what you can do and what feels right.

reminds me more of gay bashers than the kkk. i guess because you

can't tell if someone is gay or vegan just by looking at them, but

also because a lot of these anti-vegans use the term " soy fag " . you

know, studies have shown that gay bashers often have unconscious

sexual feelings for members of the same sex. but they lash out at

gays to deal with their ambivalent feelings and also so no one would

ever suspect them of being gay... so maybe these anti-vegans are

closet vegans. lol, but seriously maybe they actually associate being

vegan with being homosexual or effeminate so that is why they hate us

so much.

I think there's some truth in that as twice I've taken a male friend to the same veggie restaurant and both times there did seem to be quite a few gays in the restaurant, which I hadn't notice before. I 'd never associating homosexuality with veganism and I still don't, but he did take it in so way to mean that veganism was a kind of fringe thing which would appeal to gays.

I don't think it's helpful or meaningful to make sweeping

It's the second rather homophobic posting from Simon in recent days

(the first one was on another list) - I took him to task on the first

one but got no response. Let's hope he's not going for " three

strikes " .

Hmmm. Something got screwed up a bit ago when I tried replying to this..no idea how, but it got rid of my comments. I'll try this again. :}

It probably stems from a sense of guilt too (maybe subconscious). Like people who know they should quit smoking being annoyed at those constantly reminding them they should.

I think you may have a good point there.

I have also noticed that those most opposed in anything are those who

don't understand. Seems fear builds hatred the best.

Hi folks

Before we get too carried away on victimising Simon, I didn't see anything in what he said that was criticising homosexuals in any way whatsoever. I have no idea what has been said by him or anyone else on any other lists, but his post to was talking about observations he had made in a particular restaurant that there appeared to be a larger than average number of clientelle who appeared to be homosexual. I can see nothing at all offensive or homphobic in such an observation.

I would also like to add that if anyone has an objection to a post for any reason, the appropriate course of action is to contact the moderator (i.e. me) off-list. I can assure you that I would not let anyone post anything offensive without at least a warning.

In the second part of his message Simon was making generalisations

about gay people. If he had said " Black people have a good sense of

rhythm " , " Jews control the media " or " vegans are all anaemic and

thin " , presumably you would have found that offensive ? If so, then

why are similar generalisations about gay people not considered

offensive ? The subtext of any such generalisation is to demean the

minority in question - " you're all the same, you <insert minority du

jour here, ... " . By stereotyping a minority you label them as sub

human. This is a common trick among fascists, the religious right,

and other zealots. Simon seems to have a fundmanetalist christian

view on many things, and this manifests itself in various ways,

including bigotry towards gays people. Evidently you think this is

acceptable - I don't happen to agree.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. If someone makes

objectionable remarks in a public forum then these remarks need to be

challenged publicly, otherwise instead of debate and free speech all

we have is censorship and kangaroo courts.
