Guest guest
PLEASE REPOST AND HELP STOP THE KILLING! Dear Supporters: Guess how successful your SB 250 calls and letters have been? So successful that faxes and calls have been coming in at an incredible rate for the last few days!! So successful that Senate offices across Sacramento have reported a huge increase in "YES on SB 250!" phone calls and faxes!! But, they are also so successful that a large number of backyard breeders are now panicking and have banded together to try to defeat the bill. Responsible breeders produce healthy, purebred animals for show and sale in California. These responsible breed stewards follow the law, treat pets with respect, work to reduce euthanasia, and are ca lling and writing in support of SB 250. But, backyard (illegal) breeders are a different story - they sell dogs and cats out of their homes without paying sales and income tax, and without having the proper permits. And now, several organized groups representing these underground breeders have sent out a barrage of alarmist emails and blogs, trying to convince people that SB 250 "criminalizes pet ownership". The dark side of underground pet breeding Emails and blogs from groups opposed to SB 250 are reaching thousands of people. They use=2 0falsehoods and hyperbole to inflame readers against the bill. Actual quotes from the opposition to SB 250: "SB 250 and bills like it are meant to end all pet ownership in California". SB 250 is a "free pass to radical animal rights goon squads" Under SB 250, animal control will "TAKE YOUR ANIMALS AND MAKE YOU A CRIMINAL!" "Senator Maldonado's office said previou sly he was getting a lot of No on SB 250 e-mails. For some reason today, the calls are split 50/50. So we need to call, call, call him." "Senate Pro Tem Leader Darrell Steinberg told us his office received only 94 phone calls for No on SB 250. Call Senator Steinberg today!" "I am terrified of all legislators, whom I now view as irrational sadists." SB 250 supporters are "fascists" who "will not stop until no one in our country is allowed to drink milk or eat eggs" "Americans like me are hated for having a dog, and having been born in the U.S. and not a foreign country." These groups are begging their readers, including people living out of state, to contact each and every Senator, and repeat talking points meant to scare Legislators away from supporting this reasonable bill. Why are they doing this? Plain and simple... SB 250 holds pet owners accountable by enforcing existing laws. And because many of these backyard breeders are operating illegally, enforcing existing laws threatens their underground business. Period. PLEASE HELP US FIGHT this shameful assault on our Legislature. If you have not yet called your Senator, do it now, without delay. Leave a message if it is after hours. And if you cannot leave a message, try alternate numbers or call again Monday. Phone numbers are shown below. We cannot let groups who hide their income, evade their taxes and fill our shelters with the results of their excess animal breeding scare our Legislators away from helping animals. SB 250 will be voted on this week. Please join animal rescuers, responsible breeders, veterinarians and pet lovers by calling now! And if you have not yet sent an automatic letter (it only takes a few mouse clicks), please use our automatic letter tool.
