Guest guest
I just noticed that the dried cranberries I can purchased at WHOLE FOODS MARKET have sunflower oil on them, to keep them shiny and not sticking to ea other. I know we want to reduce processed oils. Do you have other recommendations or brands that do NOT use oil on their dried cranberries? Thanks
Guest guest
Can you talk to a department manager and ask if they can order another brand that doesn't have oil on them? I know I've bought dried cranberries before with no added ingredients at my local health food store. I used to manage a health food store so I know they can purchase other brands than what is stocked on the shelves. Another alternative for the future is to buy up a supply in the fall and dry your own in a dehydrator. If you don't own one, maybe you know someone that will let you borrow it for that sole purpose. Guest guest
I just pulled mine out of my drawer here at work and they also have sunflower oil. I purchased them at Trader Joes, they are the organic dried to put in my oatmeal. I just wouldn't have thought. Guest guest
Your right Martha, I can't wait for the season and I will dry my own. That is how it is getting to be, want good food, grow/prepare your own. Loving it! , Martha <mnatural22 wrote: > > Can you talk to a department manager and ask if they can order another brand that doesn't have oil on them? Guest guest
Does anyone have a recommendation for a dehydrator? I see many brands listed on amazon. Price range about $50. Not sure where to start in choosing? Thanks Tom
Guest guest
I have an Excalibur, Tom, and really like it. I'd say I've had it about six or seven years. At the time, my late husband and I did a lot of research on different brands. It seems like our research pointed to it as the best for our needs. MarthaP.S. I think Amazon sells it. Guest guest
The Wal-Mart store brand dried cranberries do not contain oil. They are sweetened, but I'm ok with that. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Make sure you check out the nutritional data - how many grams of sugar and fat; I just bought some dried cranberries at my local health food store, and even though oil is listed as an ingredient, it must be a very small amount because the fat content was 0g. I'd rather have a touch of oil than processed sugar myself. I will add them to muffins made with applesauce and okara from my soymilk maker. I made an apple only batch Monday (22 mini muffins I think), and they were gone that day - I guess my 2 teenagers didn't realize they were eating something healthy!! , " threefatesfiber " <maryl4 wrote: > > > The Wal-Mart store brand dried cranberries do not contain oil. Guest guest
Just curious, Kristin, what is the serving size listed in the nutritional data? That can make a world of difference. Sometimes the companies make the serving size small so that the fat content is less than 1/2 gm. That way they can say there is zero gm of fat when technically there is not. In Mark's defense "this group is for posting vegan recipes with no added oils." That's taken right from the groups homepage. Whether to purchase prepared food with added sugar or added fat is, of course, each persons' prerogative. You and Mark differ in that regard. Guest guest
Hello Tom, I just went to my Whole Foods Market today to check out the bulk dried cranberries and they do not contain any oil at all. If your local WFM has a bulk section that would be the route I would take. Thanks again for the post and info.. SamuelS
