Guest guest Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Mary, Eating vegetable not necessary make you thinner sweetie. it is the quantities and qualities of foods that you intake... " we are what we eat " ...count your calories intake each day, pencil down the count and serving, use measure cup if possible. exercise 45 minutes to 1 hour per day as 30 minutes exercise per day only prevent you not to gain any weight but definitely not to lose any either... I hope this help. PS: how to count your calories intake, take 10/12/15 calorie per your body weight. Let's say if you weight 100 pound, you need 1000 calories if you are not active, 1200 calories if you are mild active, and 1500 calories if you are super active. If you work in the office and never exercise in your life, you body need no more than 1000 calories a day to function. If you have not been eating much but still not losing weight, which mean your body has adjusted to winter sleep/starving mode, no matter how little you eat, you will continue to gain weight and not lose the weight you want, your body will keep function the same and store up all the fat for later use. the bad part is that what is burning inside is not fat, it is your muscle dear... Guest guest Report post Posted August 7, 2007 That's true, Donna and Judy. I also noticed that May is only 10 pounds from her target weight. That can be hard for _anyone_ to budge, without some real lifestyle changes, like new exercise on top of whatever your regular routine is, cutting out salt, etc. I'm having trouble budging my last _40_ pounds, despite carefully watching my vegan intake and walking every day. I'm finally coming to accept the fact that I have to seriously increase my exercise. :-) Sharon wwjd wrote: > Many factors could play into this. Guest guest Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Las year I lost 10 Lbs that I did not need to lose during my treck of the John Muir trail (I did in 16 days). I actually tried to fatten myself up before the trip, which was OK, at least I ended up slender but not emaciated. I am telling you guys, a 45 lb pack on your back while hiking 15 miles a day across 17 mountain passes will get your weight where you want it (if you want to reduce it). My dad is 77 and is unhappy with his weight, right now he is doing the 1000 km pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (in Spain). I am curious to know how his weight will do, he has a hard time keeping it off usually but I think he will be a slender man at the end of his hike. Hopefully with some good memories and fun adventures to go with it too. , Sharon Zakhour <sharon.zakhour wrote: > > That's true, Donna and Judy. > > I also noticed that May is only 10 pounds from her target weight. Guest guest Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Excellent advise. I'm not able to get about much, so I try to keep my calorie intake at 1000, But one day a month, I don't focus on the calories, I think this jump starts my system. I have had a gastric roux en y, but that only took off the first 200 pounds, now, I have to do like everyone else, watch what I eat and do as much as I'm physically able, so that I am getting some exercise. I have found I have lost much more weight since I ve gone veggie, but I still have to focus on what I eat. I kept a food diary for the first month before giving up meat, just to see what I was eating. What amazed me was how much I was eating, in little bits all day. I suppose I'm a compulsive eater, which is why I stress focus on what goes into your mouth. Guest guest Report post Posted August 8, 2007 If you only need to lose 10 pounds, you must be close to your goal. The last 10 pounds is difficult to lose. You do have to count your calories and exercise. It is easy for a vegetarian to have a nice dessert, and they have calories. I don't know how long you have been eating your fruits and vegetables. Fruits can have lots of calories and natural sugars. Bananas are very high in calories. Keep on eating your vegetables, and I think your body will find its ideal weight. Guest guest Report post Posted December 9, 2007 Yes, refined carbs, processed foods (high in salt) and fatty dairy (cheese, ice cream) in general will get you. I lost 40 lbs this year by eating veggies, fruit, legumes, seeds and nuts. (Prior to that I'd lost about 37 lbs so my total loss has been over 70lbs.) I also eat no added salt or oil. I still have another 25 or 30 lbs to lose but my body has decided to plateau for awhile. Now, having said that, yesterday I helped my youngest make the most amazing penuche. She took it to a party, but not before I'd eaten several pieces. Oh, man, was that good! ;-) If you want an _amazing_ penuche recipe, use this: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Penuche/Detail.aspx And now I'm going to make my morning green smoothie -- today it will be full of spinach and zucchini, and then I'm off to the gym. :-) Sharon P.S. If you have a Trader Joes nearby, they have affordable frozen fruits and veggies! iowa_classic wrote: > Thanks for this thread. Guest guest Report post Posted December 9, 2007 yeah ,I feel you! I am heavier as veg because ,most of my convenience foods end up being granola bars and pretzels. It is more difficult to find veggi options on the go, yes, I know pack a lunch...sometimes it doesn't work out and the choices are fast food, cafeteria, or vending machine. I'm inspired by the mention of a spinach smoothie, not a bad idea to do frozen fruit smoothies to go. I'm gonna set up my blender and supplies for the morning! (Still have to watch portion sizes on that kind of stuff though, I know) Besides fruit and veggies rather than refined food, I think it all comes down to controlling portions-easier said than done-good luck all. melissa P , " iowa_classic " <iowa_classic wrote: > > Thanks for this thread. Guest guest Report post Posted December 9, 2007 I find mostly that the selections are the same year around at the grocery stores. There are a very few seasonal items, like japanese persimmons, figs and pomegrantes, okra, etc. Most everything else is available year around. That is a good thing about chain stores. They have the buying power to get lots of variety in things in all of their stores. When we go snow skiing, I've often ordered salads, or cooked veggies, soups, hot drink(teas, hot chocolate), etc..., when we stop for lunch and dinner. I eat the same year around. That is the way we grew up and I love it and cook for my family that way. Judy - iowa_classic Sunday, December 09, 2007 8:35 PM weight loss Nope, no Trader Joe in this neck of the woods. There isnt one in the whole state. There are veges at our local HYvee, that is why I was thinking of getting a Magic Bullet or something. They arent locally grown, I'm not sure they are even USA grown! For fresh fruit right now there are apples, bananas and oranges. It is going to be a long haul till spring. Part of the problem right now too is it is 17 degrees outside. Anything with carbs and butter sounds really good in this weather. Salads and raw veges just arent as appealing to me when I'm wearing knit sweaters and parkas. Kandi

Guest guest Report post Posted January 3, 2008 Hi Fon ~ That prednisone is some nasty stuff; are you still taking it? I hope you can drop the pounds it so generously helped you gain. :-) You made me hungry with your descriptions and I haven't had much of an appetite being sick! Cindi fonv <fonv wrote: Well, I am not (now) reeeealy overweight but I gained 25 pounds when the doctor put me on prednisone for my arthritis and have had quite a time getting rid of it! I am also diabetic so watching my weight and trying to keep the appetites happy (balance, you know!) is ongoing. Most of the tahini is on toast for breakfast -- it sort of " sticks to my ribs " and helps prevent the middle of the morning slump. I am VERY allergic to peanuts so that is out. The olive oil? Well, when I quick-fry (like stir fry) chopped greens w/ onions (or not), I like the little added flavor that it gives. That plus the fact that it keeps the greens from sticking to the pan! We try to have some greens every day when we can. I love food and love cooking -- especially when I enjoy the ingredients --and it makes me happy to have that good smell around the house. Today I plan to make some homemade cranberry relish. Tonight I will put the sweet potatoes in the crockpot for overnight cooking. It might sound odd, but they - with or without a pat of " butter " or a dab of maple syrup or a dash of ginger or cinnamon -- are a very nice breakfast! There! Have I made you hungry yet? LOL Tomorrow I do the holiday thing with pots and pots of gravy, potatoes etc. But we will also have a salad or greens or a tray with carrot, celery sticks etc. Fon Vestal

I learned that from this site: http://whfoods.org/index.html (it's not a vegetarian site but it has a very heavy emphasis on vegetables and other vegetarian food with good information if you ignore the non-veg section.) and the technique as written there is: Start your Healthy Sauté by heating 1 TBS of broth in a stainless steel skillet over medium heat. Once the broth begins to bubble add onions and sauté stirring frequently. After the onions have cooked for about 5 minutes, you can then add other ingredients such as garlic, or fresh ginger. Once they have had a chance to cook together for just another minute, add other vegetables. This method enables you to have flavorful sautéed vegetables without heating oil. .. . . although when I went to the link to double-check that I had the correct URL, I noticed this intriguing article: Olive Oil-Rich Mediterranean Diet Improves Insulin Sensitivity in Type 2 Diabetics http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=btnews & dbid=5 The sample size in the study is particularly small, but the finding of lower fasting blood sugar in those whose diets included olive oil and nuts seems worth pursuing with further research. (I'm still going to try to cut down on my consumption of olive oil, anyway. Too much of a good thing is still too much!) Sparrow
Guest guest Report post Posted February 18, 2010 I have been doing " Vegan " for the past several weeks and arriving here from a " Low Glycemic Load " WOE the switch was not too difficult. The novelty of eating starches is just now beginning to wear away a bit and I am really trying to focus on the spanach, collards, stringbeans and like that. So far frozen Okra with a few tsps. of coarse corn meal (pam high heat spray and a little water added when okra is mostly cooked thru) has been a big hit as it a great taste. Frozen Cauliflower is so bland and Frozen Collards is like trying to eat my socks and I LIKE collards so I must not be cooking them right. Anyway, I have not lost any weight at all and I may have actually gained a few pounds I would like to hear comments about that. I have lowered fats to scant (one shaved curl) ghee in a few food items per day and high heat Pam spray only. Oatmeal (pin head-Scotch) or Grits for breakfast and frozen veggies, beans, brown rice, baked pots both white and sweet and whole grain breads, small servings of nuts. I try for fresh fruits but keep frozen strawberries, blueberries for when I run out of fresh. I try to walk 10,000 steps per day but usually only make 1/2 of that- planning to do some light weights and more walking very soon. My goal is to lose 50 pounds but to get under 200 is my major goal which is about 10 lbs to lose. I am 5' 6 1/2 " and 67 years old. Any suggestions would be very wellcome.
