Guest guest
I am having the hardest time eating. My body craves so much food ever since I stopped eating meat about 8 or 9 months ago. I am disgusted by what's in our meats, but I don't know how to eat a healthy diet. I've gone back and forth with being vegan and I feel more energized and internally healthy, but I don't know how to balance my foods and I am not ok with how I look visually. I have gained 20 lbs in the past year and I have tried everything to get it off. I no longer feel motivated to do anything about because it ends up taking over my life. I want to drop that 20lbs as well s learn more about how to balance my diet as a Vegan. I am willing for any help, suggestions, or just random conversations. Please help though! ~Deb
Guest guest
Hello My name is Lee, and I have been a vegan since 1995. I agree that it is sometime hard to control your food intake when you switch from meat to fruits vegetables and nuts. However, I am 70 years old, I exercise 1 hour every day, I drink plenty water (6-10) glasses per day. My weight is the same now as when I retired from the military in 1984. You can get through this. Instead of eating a lot of food at one time, try eating small amounts lets say 6 to 8 times per day. You should never eat until you feel full, eat just enough to remove the feeling of being hungry. Guest guest
Hi DebSorry to hear you're struggling with this!I would highly recommend that you listen to the podcasts at www.compassionatecooks.com. Colleen has a wonderful way of looking at the world, and promoting a healthful and ethical way of living. I find her really inspiring and my only complaint is that she only does a new podcast every couple of weeks! Definitely worth a listen. What do you mean by 'don't know how to balance my foods'?Best wishesaliceOn 14/06/2009, at 5:53 AM, lildw16 wrote:I am having the hardest time eating. Guest guest
Hi Deb I'd recommend picking up a couple of books, such as anything by Dr. John McDougall or Dr. Joel Fuhrman. They both advocate a low-fat, vegan diet. Their books generally contain menu plans built from the recipes in the book, which might be what it takes to help you figure out how much and what to eat. I've been using Rip Esselstyn's Engine 2 Diet book a lot lately. It also has great recipes and menu plans, all of which are low-fat vegan. Hope that helps! Keep on asking questions if you get stuck! Guest guest
With all these low fat vegan gurus its hard to pick just one. I am trying to do the Mcdougall way, but am curious as to what Engine 2 diet is. I know Furhman is more about fruit while Mcdougall is more about starch and Ornish allows some dairy. They all advocate a vegan lifestyle. Deb, simply eat lots of veggies, some fruits, some whole grains and legumes drink plenty of water and exercise. Simple but hard to do. The 4 basic food groups for any self respecting vegetarian. http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/food_groups.html If you want to lose weight cut fruits, whole grains, legumes in half and eat more veggies.
