what is Urad Whole (Gota) a/k/a black matpe without skin?

I was at an beyond amazing international grocery store near Cincinnati

yesterday (Jungle Jims) where they have foods from around the world. I

picked up a bag of Urad Whole (gota). It looks like it might be either

a bean or a grain. But I'm just not sure. I can certainly look it up

on the manufacturer's website, but I wanted to know if any of you can

share any great recipes you might have for this stuff...

Urad dal is a bean or legume. You can do a Google search to find

recipes for it (Dal Makhani is a famous one it's often used in), or

you can use it in place of most other dals in soups and other recipes.

The problem with urad is that it takes longer to cook than other dal,

and since you bought whole rather than split urad, it will take longer

still. Just be patient and cook it until it is tender.
