Guest guest
Help Animals at San Francisco Zoo PLEASE ATTEND Thursday, August 7, Meeting at San Francisco City Hall Your attendance is needed on Thursday, August 7, to help animals at the San Francisco Zoo. The Board of Supervisors' Rules Committee will hear Ordinance 080818, introduced by Supervisor Chris Daly, that will transform the San Francisco Zoo to a zoo sanctuary that provides a home for animals in need, such as rescued wildlife and exotic animals confiscated from illegal imports or private pet "ownership" situations. The ordinance would also establish a much-needed, stand-alone advisory committee to the Board of Supervisors focused solely on prioritizing improving conditions for animals and animal welfare at the zoo. WHAT: PUBLIC HEARING TO HELP ANIMALS AT SAN FRANCISCO ZOO WHEN: THURSDAY, AUGUST 7th at 11:30am - 1:30pm (While the meeting starts at 10am, and we encourage you to attend the entire meeting, it's most important people be available during public comment which should be 11:30am - 1:30pm) WHERE: SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL, ROOM 263 The supervisors are scheduled to vote on the ordinance at the August 7th meeting. Over the past few weeks In Defense of Animals and local activist Deniz Bolbol have met with the San Francisco Zoological Society, which manages the city-owned zoo, in order to try to work together on zoo reform. At the time of this writing, the meetings continue. Based on the 15 years of management under the Zoological Society, which has demonstrated that the animals are not the priority, it is time for the city to establish a progressive direction for the zoo - one that prioritizes helping animals in need and animal welfare. The Zoological Society has stated that it does not embrace transitioning the zoo to a facility that primarily takes in animals in need. In Defense of Animals stands firmly behind Ordinance 080818 which is designed to address longstanding animal welfare problems and create a progressive, animal-focused zoo that all San Franciscans take pride in. We need your help to make the changes necessary a reality. PLEASE JOIN US IN HELPING ANIMALS AT THE SF ZOO. You can watch the first Zoo hearing (July 17) online here: http://sanfrancisco.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=13 Please TAKE THESE ACTIONS to help the animals at the San Francisco Zoo: 1) ATTEND the Rules Committee meeting on August 7 at 11:30 a.m., San Francisco City Hall , Rom 263 to support this important ordinance. 2) WRITE (http://ga0.org/campaign/sfzoosupes) and call the San Francisco Supervisors urging them to co-sponsor the zoo ordinance 080818. Please tell the supervisors that they must do what is best for the animals who are wards of the city. 3) TELL your friends and family about this issue and ask them to contact the Board of Supervisors and/or attend the August 7 hearing in support of Supervisor Daly's Ordinance 080818. We have been working together for years to improve conditions for the animals at the San Francisco Zoo. For too long, their welfare has taken a back seat to other concerns, such as attracting revenue, bringing in new animals and building frivolous visitor amenities. In the aftermath of the tragic Christmas Day tiger mauling, international attention has focused on the zoo and its numerous animal welfare deficiencies. This has created an unprecedented opportunity to secure real reform at this troubled zoo and Supervisor Daly's ordinance is the vehicle by which meaningful change can be made to help the animals at the zoo.
