It's a cat fight in tiger land, Massillon, NewsChannel5 reported.

An animal rights group has criticized the use of a tiger cub, the mascot of the high school team in what many consider is football-crazy Massillon.

 

 

 

The team uses a live tiger for shows during its football season.

 

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Massillon to stop using tiger cubs and sometimes big cats as mascots.

 

In a letter to Massillon schools, PETA wrote that live animals used as mascots are subject to stress and fear from unfamiliar surroundings and crowd noise.

 

Football fans disagree.

 

"They're not harming the animal," said Michelle Criswell. "I don't think it's a problem."

 

WEWS got a look at OB33, a 12-week-old cub who is the 33rd tiger mascot in Massillon's history.

 

In the past, Massillon's tiger was donated to a zoo after the season. In recent years, the tigers are being adopted by private exotic animal owners.

 

Cleveland's Benedictine High School als uses tiger cubs as mascots, and PETA officials plan to write them a letter next.

 

Despite PETA's concerns, the tradition will continue this fall.

 

"It's a great tradition," said Massillon School Superintendent Al Hennon.
