Guest guest
Hi folks Just an update about our Friday dinner plans - for this month's BAVeg SF dinner, we will be going to BOK CHOY GARDEN, instead of Zante's as originally planned. We decided to make this change because we have not been able to confirm to our satisfaction that the pizza dough at Zante's is vegan. Their website, and many articles about Zante's, say that they have a vegan Indian pizza - but someone tipped us off that there may be milk in the crust and that Zante's seems to think that it's okay to still call the pizza vegan, as it doesnt have cheese on top. Today we stopped by again ask in person about the ingredients . We specifically asked "Does it have ANY dairy? ", and got the firm answer No. When we asked what the specific ingredients were, we were told "milk", by two different employees (including a cook). When we spoke to the manager he said they make a different batch of dough without milk for the vegan pizza, and use that for the vegan pizzas - but, coincidentally, this was after we told him that milk in the crust = not vegan. We've never operated a restaurant, but it seems strange to have two different dough mixes. Why not just one dough mix for everyone... And that is our concern with Zante's -- if there is only one dough mix, does the dough mix contain milk... (For folks who are wondering why we are concerned with whether the crust contains milk, the short answer is that cows are repeatedly artificially impregnated and need to give birth to a calf before they will produce milk. The calf is taken away from the cow, so that humans can drink the milk instead. And if you've read When Pigs Cry to the Moon, you'll know what a sad and traumatic experience this is for both mother and calf ) So, we're moving the dinner to BOK CHOY GARDEN for this month.
