Protesters will also target Safeway for selling poisoned farmed salmon and union contract issues. Where: Safeway Inc. headquarters at 5918 Stoneridge Mall Road in Pleasanton, California. When: Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 8:00 AM Who: The Sea Turtle Restoration Project and Bay Area union and farmed salmon activists will be picketing and leafleting in sea turtle and salmon costumes with protest signs and banners. Why: The Sea Turtle Restoration Project will also release a report showing that grocers are failing to post mercury warning signs as required under the consumer right-to-know low Prop. 65 in Safeway stores state-wide. Under California¹s Proposition 65, retailers must post advisory signs warning of toxics in products. Swordfish, tuna, and shark contain high levels of mercury, which is toxic to developing fetuses and children. Surveys of Safeway stores have revealed that despite an interim agreement with the California Attorney General, Safeway stores state-wide are not adequately posting warning signs. Protestors want adequate warning signs in all sections where seafood is sold, a commitment from Safeway to pull toxic swordfish from its seafood counters and a commitment to post signs in all Safeway stores nationwide. Resources: … B-roll footage of mercury emissions, fish being cooked, fishing boats, longlining, families buying fish, etc. available upon request. … Copies of the new report can be found at www.seaturtles.org (click the ³Mercury, Swordfish and Sea Turtle Campaign²) … Press documents can be found at www.seaturtles.org (click the ³Mercury, Swordfish and Sea Turtle Campaign²) For more information, please contact: Andy Peri Sea Turtle Restoration Project Phone: 415-488-0370 x104 Pager: 415-303-0000 Email: andy www.seaturtles.org www.gotmercury.org
