Guest guest
Greetings Members: For those of you who've had concerns about the possibility of Teflex Sheets giving you cancer, Gideon Graff of Sprout Raw Food, Atlanta, GA has been in contact with the President/CEO of Excalibur Dehydrators who passed on the following information. This should dispel the myth. Elaine RE: TEFLON CAN GIVE YOU CANCERWed, 13 Jul 2005 10:40:51 -0700I will be forwarding you the MSDS (material safety data) Sheet along with information about our Teflex- off gassing occurs 720 degrees- so you do not have a problem what so ever! When the Teflex is made they are actually heat it up in the layering process past 700 degrees so that all the off gassing has occurred and nothing is left - it is totally safe for foods. The problems with the spray-on Teflon coatings [on pots and pans] is that they are sprayed on and do not go through the same heating and layering process. Then people abuse their pans- like leaving them on the stove with nothing is in them or heating up oil- which goes well over 700 degrees then they have the off gassing problems.Bottom Line Teflex sheets are safe for foods and they have already had all the potential harmful components removed or (off gasses) during the layering process. Even if that was not done you will NEVER get to 720 degrees in a dehydrator.Thank you so much for asking the question, so many times people hear something like this and do not get all the information! Guest guest
Thanks Margie for your comment. I've frequented this site before. It has so much information! Anyone else care to chime in? Margie Roswell <mroswell wrote: For more information on Teflon, cancer, and also reproductive effects, see ewg.orghttp://www.ewg.org/issues/siteindex/issues.php?issueid=5014A note, that while I believe that the dehydrator sheets are less toxicthan pans, the Material Safety Data Sheet that she sent along was likelywritten before the Environmental Working Group exposed any of thisinformation.Teflon is a "likely human carcinogen." Also, canaries (literally) die whentheir human housemates cook on teflon.I do use teflex sheets when I make flax crackers.I had my teflon levels tested at an EWG event last year called "Do youhave it in you?" I had the second-lowest in their study group, for all the PFCs (perflourinated chemicals) that they tested.Best Regards,MargieFri, 15 Jul 2005, E.
