Jenny's Answer: I would like to contribute my own stats for the record. Raw food has indeed moisturized my skin. I believe the skin is one of the indicators of one's state of health, as are also: energy level, ideal weight, condition of eyes and hair. I started out eating 100% raw on July 10th and began a daily regimen of following the principals of Natural Hygiene with the goal of learning to nourish myself (FINALLY at age 45). Nourishment includes aerobic exercise, sunlight, water, rest and relaxation in addition to the " ideal diet, " (according to " Natural Hygiene " ) so I have studied these out for myself and have stayed with it doggedly. As a result I've discovered many, many health benefits and I've lost 50 pounds so far (I've still got 25 to go or so). I eliminated from my diet processed oil of any kind--no not even olive oil, no not even coconut oil outside of eating coconut. (I've heard raw coconut oil is different, but haven't tried it!) From my understanding the essential fats (and protein and carbs) are all provided in raw fruits, veges, nuts and seeds. Each of these food types has a ratio of macronutrients of fat, carbohydrates and protein. Nuts, for example, have a greater ratio of a healthy form of fat, but they also have carbs and protein too. Avocados have a lot of fat, but they have other goodies in them too. Dark green leafys have a lot of protein, about half I've read, but they too have healthy fats and carbs in them. There is always an emphasis on Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids because they are a more rare essential fat. They are found in Flax seed, so I bought a coffee grinder and every day I grind 2 Tablespoons of golden flax seeds(tastier than the dark seeds!) stir the ground seeds up in water and gulp 'em down. The body heals from the head down and from the inside out. This makes total sense to me. For self preservation the brain has got to be top on the list, (punny of me, eh?) and then, of course, the vital organs inside us are next in priority for our system to be in good running order. I read that you should not expect to see any real differences until 3 or 4 months after a change to the all raw and " Natural Hygiene " lifestyle. Anyway, I shared all that to tell you this. I used to have very dry skin especially on my face, arms and legs and rough patchy skin on my elbows and heels. I use to slather on lotion every day. I also had horribly peely, itchy skin on my feet. My heels had rough and cracking skin. I knew feet were " last on the list " but, after 5 months all raw and the " Natural Hygiene " lifestyle, I already see big improvements in my skin. My feet aren't itchy, I don't use lotion any more and my heels and elbows are soft! My skin has been moisturized internally by a raw food diet and healthy natural hygiene lifestyle! Doesn't it seem backwards that when I eliminated oil from my diet, my skin became less dry? " Vegigran, " someone in this raw group, wrote me: " When the blood stream is full of fat, the glucose (nutrients) cannot transfer across to the cells. This is also true of the transfer of oxygen to the cells. When I use to centrifuge blood, I couldn't believe the amounts of fat in some patients blood serum. " So that explains it! When there is too much fat in our bloodstream there is a breakdown in nourishment to our cells. No wonder we end up with skin problems? Do you want your skin to have that natural, healthy glow? My advice is TRY ALL RAW FOR FIVE MONTHS along with plenty of exercise, rest, water, sunlight, fresh air and all the components of the " Natural Hygiene " healthy lifestyle and see for yourself!
